Details Surrounding ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Revealed

Director Bryan Singer reveals a few details about his next X-Men movie titled ‘Apocalypse’ that’s slated for a 2016 release date…

The highly anticipated mutant sequel ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ is still a few months from release (May 23 to be exact) but that doesn’t mean we can’t already begin looking ahead towards the next major movie from director Bryan Singer and that will be ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘, which is slated to open in 2016.

The moment the movie was announced, comic book fans started foaming at the mouth with the prospect of ultimate big bad Apocalypse finally coming alive on the big screen. Through four previous X-Men movies as well as stand alone features like the Wolverine movies, Apocalypse has never made an appearance.

Now it seems as if Singer wants to make the story come to life through his next X-Men project and while he’s not telling the exact details of the film just yet, it’s sounding exactly like an Apocalypse story.

“One thing that interests me is the notion of ancient mutants,” Singer said in the most recent Empire Magazine. “What would people thousands of years ago, without the benefit of science, think mutants were? And more importantly, what would mutants thousands of years ago think they were? Gods? Titans? Angels? Demons? And if such mutants did exist thousands of years ago, what became of them? Did one survive?”

The character Apocalypse first originated in X-Factor in 1986 and was revealed to be the first ever mutant. He was born over 5000 years ago and eventually becomes one of the biggest villains in the X-Men universe, most popularized by the major event from 1995 and 1996 called ‘Age of Apocalypse’ where an alternate timeline is created and the ancient mutant takes over the world.

Screenwriter Simon Kinberg, who worked on X-Men: Days of Future Past, actually mentioned that particular storyline when asked about the new project he’s working on with Singer. Given the fact that Days of Future Past will showcase a time traveling Wolverine sent back to stop a dystopian future from occurring, there’s a great chance the events of this latest movie could lead directly into Apocalypse.

“Age of Apocalypse was one of my favorite stores,” Kinberg said. “We like the stakes of it, and it feels like a story that could impact a lot of our favorite characters in big, dramatic ways. We feel it’s a very different story from Days of Future Past. For starters, it’s a very different villain, and the characters will be in very different places emotionally.”

Neither Singer nor Kinberg would confirm if Apocalypse (the character) could or would be referenced in the upcoming ‘Days of Future Past‘ feature, but with the new movie already scheduled for a 2016 release, it’s hard to believe there won’t be at least a few references in the upcoming film to get ready for the next one. Assuming the release date for X-Men: Apocalypse remains the same, filming for the movie should begin late in 2014 or early 2015.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released on May 23, 2013.
