Take a look at the new trailer for ‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 while we dissect everything you see squeezed into the 1:44 clip…
‘Game of Thrones‘ will return on April 6 at 9pm ET/PT for season 4, but at exactly 8:58pm on Sunday night, HBO rolled out a new trailer nearly two minutes long packed full of new goodies to devour. So first things first check out the video of the trailer below and see what you think and then scroll down further as we dissect everything you watched.
Let’s handle the music first of all since everyone will be asking about the backdrop to the new trailer:
‘Feral Love’ by Chelsea Wolfe — you can listen to the track below:
:03 second mark: You can see a rather large dragon’s shadow cast over a city. It appears Daenerys’ ‘children’ have grown quite a bit since we last saw them
:06 second mark: Joffrey has a conversation with his uncle/father Jamie, who has a fresh new haircut to go along with the new season
“They know I saved the city, the know I won the war,” Joffrey says.
“The war’s not won,” warns Jamie.
:33 second mark: It’s safe to say Daenerys’ stance on slavery hasn’t changed in this new season. She battled valiantly to free slaves in two cities last season, but there are still more slaver kingdoms to conquer before she forges the sea to go back to Westeros. It seems she’s not wavering on this goal as season 4 picks up
“The have a choice,” Daenerys says. “They can live in my new world, or they can die in their old one.”
:40 second mark: Tyrion walking down the aisle in chains. This was the one, very brief clip we had from the HBO 2014 video that premiered late last year teasing the new season. If you’ve never read the books, this scene will seem strange to you. If you’ve read the source material the reason why Tyrion is in handcuffs will probably make all the sense in the world
:45 second mark: Our first look at Pedro Pascal as he plays a pivotal new role in season 4 of ‘The Red Viper’ Oberyn Martell. We’ll hear from him in a few seconds.
:47 second mark: The Wildings led by Mance Rayder as they continue to move closer and closer towards an assault on the wall and the kingdoms of Westeros. Jon Snow, now recovered from his arrow wounds gears up the Night’s Watch for the battle ahead.
“If the Wildings breach the wall, they’ll roll over everything and everyone,” Jon Snow warns
:53 second mark: We see Yara Greyjoy on a boat clearly on a mission to find or avenge her brother Theon, who was carved up by Ramsey Snow at the end of last season. It seems Jamie Lannister is also getting a wooden hand to replace the one he had cut off during season 3. The voiceover says, “Given the opportunity, what do we do to those who hurt the ones we love?”
1:06 mark: For the first time, ‘The Red Viper’ speaks as he lays out an interesting message for Tyrion to pass along to his father Tywin Lannister.
“Tell your father I’m here,” Oberyn says. “Tell him the Lannisters aren’t the only ones that pay their debts”
If you’ve read the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin, the appearance of The Red Viper will mean more to you now, but as I’m sure you can tell from his brief conversation with Tyrion, this is not a man who seems to like the Lannisters very much at all.
1:13 mark: The first images of the Royal Wedding of Joffrey to his new queen Margaery Tyrell. His mother Cersei seems very upset about something that’s going on while warning her father and the patriarch of the Lannister family that she will ‘burn this house to the ground’ before she allows her son to be torn apart.
1:27 mark: Melisandre shares some interesting words with someone. At the end of season 3, she told Stannis that the real threat to his kingdom lie to the north where the Wildings were about to attack the wall and the Night’s Watch.
“There’s only one hell,” she says. “The one we live in now.”
1:34 mark: Tyrion in a dungeon shares words of wisdom for the foolhardy who believe that Westeros is a place where the just and unjust are punished alike
“If you want justice, you’ve come to the wrong place”
There you have it folks. Rewatch it a dozen times now like we did and see if there are any other interesting points in this clip as we get ready for ‘Game of Thrones‘ season 4!
