Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will get started with production on the “Black Adam” movie next year and he just revealed the release date for the movie in 2021…

Dwayne Johnson is ready to become “Black Adam”.

The highly publicized project that will see Johnson in the starring role as the villain turned anti-hero in the DC Universe will get into production in 2020 and the former WWE superstar just revealed the released date for the film in 2021.

In a post on his Instagram account, Johnson showed off some new artwork featuring him dressed as Black Adam with a date attached to the photo — Dec. 22, 2021 — and that’s the day his film will land in theaters.

Johnson spoke at length in the post about his passion for the project, which has been in the works for several years, as he joins the DC film universe for the first time.

“I’m honored to join the iconic DC Universe and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM,” Johnson wrote. “BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way.
“This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.”

Black Adam is a character from the DC archives who has typically served as a villain to Shazam, although in recent years DC has turned him into more of an anti-hero rather than a classic bad guy.

Black Adam’s origin story goes like this — “thousands of years before Billy Batson became a magically-empowered hero, the wizard Shazam selected another champion. Teth-Adam or “Mighty Adam” began as a hero of humanity, but then allowed his power to corrupt his ideals and desires. Now labeled Black Adam, he was exiled by Shazam, but returned in the modern day. A frequent enemy to Earth’s heroes, Black Adam believes he is the right person to lead humanity and any action he takes is necessary for the greater good.”

Obviously, “Shazam” already got a movie with Zachary Levi in the starring role and while there were rumors that Black Adam might make a brief appearance to then set up his own movie, the decision was made to leave the two characters separate for the time being.

It remains to be seen if perhaps Shazam could then make a cameo appearance in the “Black Adam” movie but for now Johnson is gearing up to play the role with production kicking off next year.

Look for “Black Adam” in theaters on Dec. 22, 2021.
