Another ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel focused around House Targaryen is currently in the works at HBO with the network nearing a pilot order…
A second ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel may be taken in fire and blood.
HBO is nearing a deal for a pilot order for a new ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel that would focus on House Targaryen during a dynasty that lasted for 300 years before the events that unfolded on the original series.
‘Game of Thrones’ creator George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who was the showrunner behind the USA science fiction series ‘Colony’, are spearheading the project for HBO.
The newest prequel is expected to focus on House Targaryen and their rise to power after Aegon Targaryen conquered the Seven Kingdoms on the back of his dragon, Balerion the Black Dread. No specific point in Westeros history has been revealed but it’s expected that the latest ‘Game of Thrones’ series would be at least partially based on Martin’s recent book titled ‘Fire and Blood’, which told the story of House Targaryen’s rise to power and the dynasty that saw the family sit on the Iron Throne for several centuries.
‘Fire and Blood’ covers the Targaryen family from the time when Aegon Targaryen decided to conquer the Seven Kingdoms after his family of dragonlords fled Valyria and set up a new home on a wayward Westerosi island later called Dragonstone all the way to the great Targaryen civil war called a ‘Dance with Dragons’. That bloody civil war ended with hundreds of deaths and likely contributed to the eventual extinction of dragons.
A version of this prequel was previously being developed by former ‘Game of Thrones’ writer and producer Bryan Cogman but that one was eventually abandoned and he ultimately moved over to Amazon in a deal with that streaming service.
The resurrected House Targaryen pilot will see Martin and Condal develop the series assuming HBO decides to move forward beyond the pilot order currently in the works.
The first ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel from Martin and Jane Goldman has already started production on a pilot starring Naomi Watts that takes place thousands of years before the original series that came to an end earlier this year. That prequel is set during a dark time in Westeros history when the White Walkers first appeared to the North and a fight that eventually ended with the construction of the legendary Wall.
HBO has declined to comment on the newest ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel but stay tuned as more news about this second series develops.
