‘Game of Thrones’ Creator Interested In Possibly Ending the Series as a Feature Film

Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin is interested in bringing the world of Westeros to life on the big screen — possibly even ending the HBO series with a two-hour movie….

It’s well known that Game of Thrones is the biggest and costliest production on television currently with 29 series regulars filming in numerous countries, not to mention sets, costumes and special effects — it’s an expensive endeavor from creation to screen.

That’s one reason why creator George RR Martin believes eventually he could see Game of Thrones as a feature film, maybe even as a way to wrap up the HBO series.

“It all depends on how long the main series runs,” Martin said when speaking to the Hollywood Reporter. “Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger. It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently stated that they would like to wrap up the show in seven seasons, possibly eight, but not much longer than that. The idea is to allow the story of Game of Thrones to be told to its ultimate conclusion, but not to drag out the series just for the sake of profit.

The other film possibility from Martin is bringing his three book novellas — Tales of Dunk and Egg — to life as a movie. The books surround events taking place in Westeros about 90 years prior to the beginning of ‘Game of Thrones’.

“They could be the basis for (a movie),” Martin said about the ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg novels. “I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more.”

It will be interesting to see if HBO would possibly sign up for this as well considering the success they had adapting ‘Sex and the City’ into a feature film as well as ‘Entourage’, which is currently filming and will be released in 2015. It’s safe to say a ‘Game of Thrones’ film would probably rake it more money than both of those previous entities.
