“Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are adapting another popular book series for their next project on Netflix…

“Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss already have experience adapting a massive series of novels for television and now they are teaming up to do the same thing again with a critically acclaimed series of sci-fi books originally published in China.

As part of their overall mega-deal with Netflix, Benioff and Weiss will adapt a trilogy of books originally published in China that are most commonly known as “The Three Body Problem” series written by Liu Cixin that tells the story about humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. The three books in the series — “The Three-Body Problem,” “The Dark Forest,” and “Death’s End” — will serve as the bedrock for the series with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson also serving as a producer on the series.

“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”

This will be the first project that Benioff and Weiss will write and produce for Netflix after inking a massive overall deal at the streaming service following their completion of “Game of Thrones” on HBO. The popular duo were involved in a bidding war between multiple outlets trying to secure their services but it was Netflix that ultimately landed Benioff and Weiss.

The first book in the series won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel and received rave reviews from several notable people including former President Barack Obama as well as Benioff and Weiss’ former collaborator George R.R. Martin.

The scope of the series is quite vast with the story taking place in in flashbacks and flash forwards as well as the present day. It’s an ambitious story to adapt, especially given the intricacies of the science discussed and explained throughout the books. Of course, Benioff and Weiss are no strangers to adapting a sprawling epic after winning a number of awards for their work on “Game of Thrones” after eight seasons.

There’s no word on how quickly “The Three Body Problem” trilogy series will be adapted but considering the expansive nature of the books, it will likely take some time for Benioff and Weiss to complete their adaptation for the small screen.
