‘Game of Thrones’ Surpasses ‘The Sopranos’ as the Most Watched Show in HBO History

Everyone should know by now how big ‘Game of Thrones’ is for HBO but now it’s officially the most watched show in the cable network’s history…

‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 still has two more episodes to go but the record ratings for the hit HBO series only seem to go up and up more each week. The show is such a success that ‘Game of Thrones’ has officially surpassed ‘The Sopranos’ as the most watched series in the history of the network.

According to a release by HBO, ‘Game of Thrones’ currently averages 18.4 million viewers each week over a multitude of formats, which surpasses ‘The Sopranos’ as the most popular show, which raked in 18.2 million viewers during the 2002 season of the show.

Season 3 of ‘Game of Thrones’ averaged 14.4 million viewers per episode.

The show isn’t slowing down either. Episode 9 of each season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is usually the most anticipated hour during the year, and there’s still the season finale coming on June 15 as well.

Not to mention ‘Game of Thrones’ has already been renewed by HBO for at least two more seasons (and likely as many as they want so long as the show keeps pulling in these kinds of ratings).

It’s high praise for a series to be mentioned alongside ‘The Sopranos’ much less to pass the show on the network they helped to build.
