Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr. Take Over ‘Superman’ This Summer

DC’s favorite writer Geoff Johns will look to work his re-inventive magic this summer when he teams with artist John Romita Jr. for a run on Superman…

Geoff Johns is no stranger to Superman having written for the character in several different incarnations during his career, not to mention his entire entry into the business came from his original start as an assistant to Richard Donner, who of course is responsible for the first two Superman movies in the late 70’s.

Now Johns will go back to work on the Man of Steel as he takes over writing duties for the featured ‘Superman’ comic in the DC Universe this summer along with famed artist John Romita Jr.

Johns has worked his magic on several DC characters in the past to help relaunch them into a different stratosphere of popularity — most notably his long run on Green Lantern as well as his recent reinvigoration of Aquaman as part of the New 52.

“There’s a lot of mystery to our story, there’s a lot of revelations to our story about our main character. Everything points back to Superman — it’s all about Superman. And that’s the key in any Superman story. Too often it takes Superman for granted and [doesn’t] make it about him emotionally, and where he is and what he’s after, and how he fits into the world,” Johns told Comic Book Resource this week.

“The fact that our story clearly is all about that, and is Superman’s story, and is tackling him on every conceivable level known and unknown — it’s fresh and new, and it’s unknown territory. We’re really not reintroducing classic villains, so to speak. We have a lot of classic elements in ours, and we have a lot of things that we’re going to polish up, but at the same time, we’re marching forward and new.”

The other major part of this announcement is the fact that Marvel stalwart John Romita Jr. is doing a DC monthly book for the first time, moving away from his roots with characters such as Spider-Man, Daredevil and the Uncanny X-Men.

The new duo will take over Superman this summer with no set timeline on how long they will work on the book together. Johns said his stint as writer will go as long as DC wants it, and given his highly involved and intricate plots that tend to work best as they unravel over years and not single issues, here’s hoping his run is a long one on the book.

Keep an eye out for more details on the relaunch of Superman under Johns and Romita’s leadership this summer.
