There are still two more episodes to go in season one, but ‘Gotham’ season 2 is already planned with a big Joker story coming first…
The first season of ‘Gotham’ will wrap up in the next two weeks with the final pair of episodes putting a cap on a pretty successful freshman campaign for the Batman prequel series starring Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue. ‘Gotham’ season 2 will begin filming this summer and executive producer Bruno Heller has already started to break ground on new story ideas including a major arc where the backstory of The Joker is finally revealed. The series teased The Joker earlier this season with the introduction of a carnival kid named Jerome, who killed his mother and was put behind bars following an investigation into the murder by Jim Gordon. There was never conformation that Cameron Monaghan, the actor who played Jerome, was actually The Joker but all the signs seem to lead in that direction. If there’s going to be proof that Jerome was/is The Joker that will happen early in season 2 because ‘Gotham’ plans to do a big story surrounding the Clown Prince of Crime to kick off the sophomore year later this fall.
“You’re not going to see teases of The Joker before the end of the season, because the beginning of season 2 is a big Joker-oriented, or ‘how the Joker came to be’ kind of story,” Heller said recently. “The beginning of season 2 is the very earliest origins of how The Joker came to be.”
Other villains from the Batman canon have started to take form this season including The Penguin and The Riddler most notably, but The Joker is undoubtedly the biggest jewel in the rogues gallery crown. ‘Gotham’ will wrap up season one with the final two episodes airing on FOX starting this Monday at 9pm ET before the cast and crew get a brief break as filming for season two fires up over the summer.
