Grand Theft Auto 5 was released this week and broke all kinds of records for first day sales…
Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on Tuesday on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and the first day sales numbers are beyond staggering.
According to a statement by Take-Two games, Grand Theft Auto 5 toppled $800 million in sales since the initial release.
“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V” said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick via IGN. “Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence. Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what The New York Times called ‘the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment’. We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games’ creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”
The $800 million mark tops any previous version for the Grand Theft Auto series as well as any game in the history of Take Two as a company.
To put that in perspective with $800 million in sales in the first day alone:
You could buy 200 million Big Macs at $4 a piece
You could buy over 246 million cans of Red Bull
You could buy more than 30,000 brand new Honda Civics
Last weekend Floyd Mayweather made over $41 million to box Canelo Alvarez. Grand Theft Auto sold more than 19 times that in one day of sales
In other words, Grand Theft Auto 5 sold a lot of freaking games.
