A new ‘Green Lantern’ series as well as an anthology based on ‘Strange Adventures’ will be coming to HBO Max from uber producer Greg Berlanti…
In brightest day or blackest night, the Green Lantern won’t escape your sight because the iconic DC superhero is finally getting his own show on the upcoming HBO Max streaming service that will launch in spring 2020.
Super producer Greg Berlanti — who is the man responsible for the Arrow-verse on the CW — has added yet another major DC character to his network of upcoming shows. Now there were no details released about the ‘Green Lantern’ show much less the characters who will be involved.
What we do know is that Berlanti will look to execute a massive do-over after he co-wrote the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ film that starred Ryan Reynolds. To his credit, Berlanti lost creative control during the making of that film and ‘Green Lantern’ is now the superhero movie that Reynolds would definitely like to forget.
In addition to the ‘Green Lantern’ series, Berlanti is also helping to develop an anthology series based on the DC property ‘Strange Adventures’, which will explore “close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and super-humans.”
“Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television,” Berlanti said in a statement. “An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet.”
‘Green Lantern’ has remained one of the most coveted DC properties but after the 2011 film bombed, it’s been difficult to get a new project off the ground. There remain rumors that DC and Warner Bros. will eventually develop a ‘Green Lantern Corps’ movie but even that remains in question after the shared film universe that was started then died a slow death in the wake of ‘Justice League’.
Berlanti has enjoyed the magic touch with the DC series he’s developed primarily for the CW up to this point with shows such as ‘The Flash’, ‘Supergirl’, ‘Batwoman’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ currently airing on the network. ‘Arrow’ is also in the midst of its final season and Berlanti will also be producing the upcoming series ‘Superman and Lois’, which was put into development earlier this week.
It will be interesting to see if Berlanti can find the same kind of success with ‘Green Lantern’ that he’s done with the rest of the DC properties on his resume. The new ‘Green Lantern’ and ‘Strange Adventures’ series will continue to be produced by Warner Bros. television, which also handle all of the other Berlanti superhero series currently airing on the CW (Warner Bros. also owns a part of the CW).
