Hugh Jackman Likely Done Playing Wolverine After X-Men: Days of Future Past

Hugh Jackman says after more than a decade of playing Wolverine on the big screen that it may be time to hang up the claws for good…

Actor Hugh Jackman has embodied the role of popular Marvel character Wolverine in six different films with a seventh on the way in 2014 when he appears in the new movie X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Starting with X-Men in 2000, Jackman’s career has always come back to the adamantium laced anti-hero through several film projects that studios continuously throw at him.

But after his most recent starring role in The Wolverine — a sequel to the 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine — and his turn in the new X-Men: Days of Future Past project it seems Jackman is ready to hang up the claws for good.

Speaking in Spain recently where he was receiving a lifetime achievement award from San Sebastian International Film Festival, Jackman confessed that his time as Wolverine has likely come to an end unless something really interesting perks up his ears (or his hair as the case may be).

“Great parts always outgrow the actors that play them,” Jackman said. “If you forget that, it’s at your own peril. They are working on it [X-Men] now and it would have to be very compelling for me to do it again. I’ve been doing it for 10 years.”

Actually, Jackman has already been playing Wolverine for 13 years and with seven different films under his belt as the character he believes it may be time to move on.

Of course like any part, that could change dramatically with the success of next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, which combines characters and actors from all of the X-films including X-Men and the recent prequel X-Men: First Class.

With original director Bryan Singer back at the helm, a huge cast list, and expectations that this could be the definitive film in the X-Men series, there’s no telling what could change between now and the film’s release that might change Jackman’s mind if another project ends up being planned.

With the success Marvel has had recently with their Avengers line of films, the success of X-Men: Days of Future Past could open up a whole new universe for the characters and stars of the films.

For now, Jackman will enjoy the fruits of his labor with the latest movie featuring Wolverine hits theaters next year.
