Almost exactly 20 years after the original film became a summer blockbuster, ‘Independence Day 2’ has a new title and now we know what the film is about…
The new ‘Independence Day’ movie will officially land in theaters on June 24, 2016 and now the highly anticipated sequel has a name and plenty of plot details about the characters returning and the threat looming overhead.
First off the title — ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’.
The new title was revealed by director Roland Emmerich in a live stream with his cast on Monday as they discussed the new film that will also take place 20 years after the events of the original ‘Independence Day’ where a group of hostile aliens landed on Earth and blew up every major city before humanity fought back and won.
Since the first attack happened, the remaining forces on Earth have teamed together to build a global defense system made from the technology left over from the previous aliens who landed and tried to destroy the planet.
Jeff Goldblum, who returns to the sequel to play David Levinson, is the man in charge of the new initiative put in place to protect Earth from any more alien invasions.
“It’s my job to lead the way in making sure everyone is safe on this precious planet,” Goldblum said. “Having faced that last challenge, we’re all working in a beautiful way under one (goal). Borders are no longer relevant in the same way, and that’s a very beautiful idea. We’re working together.”
Sela Ward plays the new President of the United States, but she’s a much different and aggressive animal from the president we met in the last film played by Bill Pullman. He’s also returning for the sequel, but what role he’ll play in the attack that happens on Earth this time is still yet to be seen.
Liam Hemsworth and Jesse Usher will both play fighter pilots in the upcoming movie with Usher taking over the role of Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, the stepson of Captain Steven Hiller, played by Will Smith in the original film. Smith is not returning for the sequel, but his on-screen wife played by Vivica A. Fox will be back where she now has a job as a hospital administrator.
Brent Spiner will also be back for the sequel playing goofy Dr. Okun, who died in the first ‘Independence Day’ but will return for the new movie. Is he alive or dead or something else? We’ll find out next year when the movie opens!
Expect more information to be released in the coming months as well as a potential teaser for the film ahead of the movie landing in theaters in 2016.
