James Gunn is in talks to direct ‘The Suicide Squad’ for DC and Warner Bros. after already being hired to write the script for the movie…
It looks like James Gunn is returning to the director’s chair.
The former ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director is in talks to take over directing duties for ‘The Suicide Squad’ movie for DC and Warner Bros. after he had previously been hired to write the script for the upcoming movie.
Now here’s where things get interesting…
According to reports, Gunn will not be writing and directing a sequel to the 2016 ‘Suicide Squad’ movie directed by David Ayer that starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Instead, Gunn is expected to relaunch the franchise as ‘The Suicide Squad’ with a new direction to the franchise along with a mostly all new cast of characters.
It’s possible that a few of the actors from the original ‘Suicide Squad’ movie could return (perhaps Robbie as Harley Quinn since she’s already filming her upcoming ‘Birds of Prey’ movie) but this is largely expected to be a brand new version of the story and the characters involved.
Gunn is a veteran director who became a household name after his work on the first two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, which remain two of the most popular titles from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He was working on the third movie in the series when some past controversial tweets resurfaced from the director and Marvel opted to part ways with him and removed Gunn from the project. Despite efforts from the cast to get him brought back, Marvel ultimately cut ties with Gunn all together and put ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ on ice until they find a new director.
Meanwhile, DC and Warner Bros wasted no time scooping up Gunn once he became available and immediately hired him to work on a script for ‘The Suicide Squad’ movie. Now it appears they are ready to put Gunn in charge of the entire franchise much like he did for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ in hopes that he can produce another smash hit.
‘The Suicide Squad’ already has a release date on August 6, 2021, which means Gunn will be getting to work on casting and production in the very near future.
