Joaquin Phoenix was the leading candidate to land the role playing Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel movie but it appears the two sides have split and gone their separate ways…
Phoenix’s name popped up a couple of months back as the actor that producers from Marvel were pursuing to play Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, that would help launch the mystical line of storytelling in the Marvel mythos.
While the movie is going forward with director Scott Derrickson at the helm, Marvel will be looking for a new leading man after Phoenix’s name was taken out of contention on Thursday.
Ethan Hawke has been another name that popped up recently for the role as well, but he still seems like a long shot at this point to land the part, but anything is possible.
Doctor Strange is expected to pick up production in 2015 with a release date on July 8, 2016.
