Uber geek god Joss Whedon has decided that he’d be interested in making a ‘Star Wars’ movie and Lucasfilm should call him tomorrow…
When Disney purchased Lucasfilm a few years ago and announced that they were relaunching ‘Star Wars’ with a brand new trilogy of sequels as well as several spinoff films, there were a few dream directors who seemed perfect to helm the franchise.
J.J. Abrams was certainly one of the top choices and he ultimately scored the opening gig with his take on ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, but there’s no denying that Joss Whedon was certainly another name on that same wish list.
Now in a year where ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ will become the first ever spinoff movie telling a story away from the main franchise, Whedon is interested in dipping his big toe into that universe.
Whedon has already been a part of the Disney family when he directed ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ but he’s now expressed interest in taking on the ‘Star Wars’ franchise but not in the way you might expect.
“Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, “I don’t want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?” But I saw the trailer for ‘Rogue’ awhile ago and I was like, “I want to do that.” To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture,” Whedon said in a recent interview.
Whedon already created one of the most iconic space sagas of all time with ‘Firefly’ and while the series was short lived on television, that single season along with the film sequel ‘Serenity’ remains one of the most popular and talked about shows amongst science fiction fans across the world.
Right now, ‘Star Wars’ already has ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ set to roll out in Decmeber with a story that focuses on the rebels who stole the plans to the original Death Star. The next spinoff will be a ‘Han Solo’ feature film with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller taking a look at that character years before he stowed away Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on a mission to the Alderaan system.
There is one more spinoff movie in the works — a film surrounding infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett — and if Lucasfilm hasn’t hired anyone yet, there’s no way Whedon wouldn’t top the list of potential candidates.
Whether or not it happens remains to be seen, but Whedon is interested and the people behind ‘Star Wars’ better be listening.
