After 17 years, a “Constantine” sequel has finally been ordered at Warner Bros. with Keanu Reeves returning to the lead role…
Keanu Reeves is set to return for a “Constantine” sequel that’s finally been ordered at Warner Bros.
The original film based on the DC Comics character was released back in 2005 while earning more than $230 million at the box office. Despite the success, a second “Constantine” film was rumored but never came to reality.
The film continued to gain status as a cult classic favorite with Reeves expressing his interest in returning to role one day if a sequel would ever get made.
“I just loved that world and I love that character,” Reeves told Variety.
Now Reeves will get the chance to play John Constantine again with director Francis Lawrence also returning for the sequel after he also helmed the original film as well.
In the comics, John Constantine is a warlock and occult detective, who often blurs the line between hero and villain while running afoul of many entities from both Heaven and Hell as he also teeters on the line between good and evil. The film version was slightly different with Reeves playing an American John Constantine — the comic book version is British — who serves as an exorcist attempting to send all the Earthbound demons back to hell where they belong.
The original film deals with Constantine attempting to fight back against the forces of evil while himself staving off death after contracting lung cancer. Thanks to all the nefarious things that Constantine has done over the years, Lucifer considers him a prize possession if he ever gets sent to hell. In the closing moments of the movie, Constantine actually sacrifices himself, which ends up gaining him entry into heaven but Lucifer refuses to allow that to happen — so he draws out the cancer killing the body and resurrects Constantine to continue living his life on Earth with anticipation that he will eventually prove he belongs in hell.
There have been calls for a “Constantine” sequel for several years and Reeves and Lawrence getting together as part of a reunion at San Diego Comic Con to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of the film only stoked the flames for a potential follow up.
Now Warner Bros. has officially pulled the trigger with Reeves and Lawrence set to return for a new “Constantine’ sequel, which will be written by Akiva Goldsman, who previously wrote on “Fringe,” “Titans” and he currently works on several “Star Trek” series at Paramount+.
There’s no word on when production could potentially start on the sequel but with the director and screenwriter in place along with the lead star returning to the project, things should get moving rather quickly on “Constantine 2.”
