Kevin Feige offers a teaser about clues that will be coming in upcoming films and TV series that will reveal the next major saga for the Marvel Cinematic Universe…
Thanks to the epic ‘Infinity’ saga that culminated with “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel Studios has a lot to live up to with the next phase of films and TV series that move beyond legacy characters like Iron Man or Steve Rogers as Captain America.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already moved into Phase 4 with numerous films like “The Eternals,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” not to mention Disney+ series such as “Loki” and “Falcon and Winter Soldier,” there still haven’t been many major clues about the next major saga that will eventually involve all of those characters.
According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, that will change very soon with several projects starting to really reveal the next big move in the MCU.
“As we’re nearing the end of Phase 4, I think people will start to see where this next saga is going,” Feige told Total Film.
“I think there have been many clues already, that are at least apparent to me, of where this whole saga is going. But we’ll be a little more direct about that in the coming months, to set a plan, so audiences who want to see the bigger picture can see a tiny, tiny, tiny bit more of the roadmap.”
There have been several major events through the first few films and TV series in the MCU including the interruption of the one true timeline in “Loki,” which also revealed the existence of Kang The Conquerer — a time traveling villain who will almost certainly serve as a major part of whatever story is coming next in the larger saga.
What happened in “Loki” as well as “WandaVision” directly led into “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which expanded the use of the multiverse in Marvel while also introducing several key characters including Reed Richards from The Fantastic Four as well as Charles Xavier from the X-Men.
Many believe that the next major saga involving the MCU will be the “Secret Wars” storyline, which was a famous crossover event that took place in the comic books between 1984 and 1985.
That story involved a cosmic entity known as the Beyonder observing the heroes and villains on Earth and deciding to transport them all to a distant galaxy to a planet he created called “Battleworld” where he pits them against each other in the ultimate fight for survival.
That particular story is one Anthony and Joe Russo showed interest in developing after they directed both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” while praising Secret Wars as a film that could be even bigger than anything that came before it.
“It would be the biggest movie you could possibly imagine, so that’s what really excites us about the story — the ambition of it is even bigger than the ambition of the Infinity Saga,” Anthony Russo said in 2020.
It remains to be seen if that’s where the MCU is headed.
Don’t forget, the eventual introduction of the X-Men still needs to happen as well as the Fantastic Four so there’s a lot of angles that could be developed in the coming months. Right now, “Ms. Marvel” is airing on Disney+ so that could potentially offer up a few clues along with “Thor: Love and Thunder” coming in July and that will undoubtedly tease future stories, especially considering the magnitude of the characters already involved in that particular film.
Marvel is also expected to appear at San Diego Comic Con in July — the first event back for the convention in three years — so it’s possible a few more announcements will be made there as well.
