Kurt Sutter released a few more details about his new project set in the same universe as Sons of Anarchy….
When news first broke on Wednesday that Kurt Sutter was in the early development stages of creating a series focused on the Mayan motorcycle club, who first appeared in Sons of Anarchy, fans of the outlaw motorcycle drama rejoiced.
Sutter has long teased a Sons of Anarchy prequel that may still happen in the future, but the Mayan project came out of nowhere considering he is mainly focused on his current show, The Bastard Executioner.
The Mayan motorcycle club were both friends and enemies with the Sons of Anarchy during the show’s seven season run so a show focused on that group would be a unique take on a new show set in the same universe while not directly interacting with the existing mythology.
Following the news that was released on Wednesday, Sutter took to Twitter later the same night to explain a few details about the project.

(And you’ll notice that nasty spinoff word isn’t in this particular article about the project)

With Sutter committed to The Bastard Executioner it’s no surprise that he wouldn’t want to juggle show running duties on two series although there’s little doubt his influence would be felt if the Mayans show goes to series.
Maybe the biggest piece of news that Sutter revealed during his Twitter session was the fact that the Mayan show — assuming it moves forward — would not take place in Northern California in the same area where his other series Sons of Anarchy took place.
Obviously like real life motorcycle clubs, the Mayans based out of Oakland on Sons of Anarchy are just one charter in a particular area, but there could be dozens of charters spread out all over the country.
According to Sutter, part of the idea for doing a Mayans show would be not interfering with the story he started and ended with Sons of Anarchy although the new show could see the rival motorcycle clubs meeting up again in a different context. Doing a Mayans series in a city other than Oakland would likely eliminate using any previous actors who have appeared on Sons of Anarchy, although Sutter did mention he would like to find a way to incorporate Emilio Rivera, who played Mayan president Marcus Alvarez for seven seasons.

So there you have it – the Sons of Anarchy Mayans project is definitely real and hopefully the show comes to fruition in the near future. There’s little doubt FX would jump at the chance to put another version of the series on air after Sons of Anarchy became the most watched show in network history.
