Marvel Comics will debut a new comic book later this year called ‘The Death of Wolverine’ — care to wager what it’s about?
Comic book companies have used the death of a major character to help pump up sales for decades so just about everybody from Superman to Batman to Captain America to Spider-Man has been axed at one point or another.
Well now it appears to be time for ultra popular X-Men character Wolverine to do his dance with death in an upcoming series titled ‘The Death of Wolverine’ from writer Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven.
According to Marvel when speaking to EW.com, the story line surrounding Logan aka Wolverine is that the mutant loses his healing ability — the very mutation that allowed him to stay alive over the course of the last 100 plus years. Without that ability, Wolverine is not only vulnerable to attack, but one has to imagine the aging process will catch up to him in quick order.
The four-part miniseries chronicling ‘The Death of Wolverine’ will land on comic book shelves on September 3 with a new issue every week leading up to the September 24 finale.
Now Marvel execs say they are approaching this story with a sense of ‘finality’ but this is comic books so I think we all know better than to believe Wolverine is going to die and actually stay dead. It’s these age old machinations in the comic book world that make me wonder if the stale formula even registers with readers any more. I for one know that Wolverine will probably come back, maybe about a year after his ‘death’ and that will also serve as a major story and arc for the comic book company. It’s an old trick that always seems predictable to me, but if it boosts sales, I guess that’s all that matters!
Look for ‘The Death of Wolverine’ this September.
