‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Crown’ star Matt Smith is the latest addition to the cast of ‘Morbius’ set in the ‘Spider-Man’ universe with Jared Leto in the lead role…
Sony will continue to roll the dice with their ownership of characters from the ‘Spider-Man’ universe with an upcoming project called ‘Morbius’ with Jared Leto set in the lead role.
Now Matt Smith — best known for his work on ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Crown’ as well as an upcoming role in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ — has joined the cast of ‘Morbius’ although his role has not yet been revealed.
‘Morbius’ follows the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease who attempts to cure himself but ultimately ends up afflicted with vampire like symptoms instead. In the comic books, Morbius starts out as a villain to Spider-Man but eventually becomes somewhat of an anti-hero instead in later versions of the character.
There’s no word on how ‘Morbius’ will have Leto portray the character but much like 2018’s ‘Venom’ it’s not likely they’ll have him play a villain with no hero as a counterpart to him. Also much like ‘Venom’, it’s not expected that Spider-Man himself Tom Holland will appear in the feature film version of ‘Morbius’.
There’s no release date yet for ‘Morbius’ but Daniel Espinoza, who led the sci-fi-horror movie ‘Life’, will serve as the director on the ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film.
