The creator of the ‘Sandman’ comics wouldn’t mind adding a mischievous Asgardian to the movie with Tom Hiddleston playing the lead role…
The idea of a ‘Sandman’ movie, based on the popular Vertigo title from creator Neil Gaiman, has been in the works for many years but now it seems closer to reality than ever before.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt along with David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises) have spearheaded the project to get the film made and made the right way.
Gaiman has always been involved with the ‘Sandman’ project on some level or another with any movie company that wanted to bring the characters to life on film, but he’s often times ended up battling to stop a bad version from being made thus why it’s taken so long for the dream to become a reality.
“My position on it has always been, for over 25 years now, I would rather see no Sandman movie than a bad Sandman movie,” Gaiman told The Radio Times. “A couple of times, people say, ‘It’s a crime there’s never been a Sandman movie’, and a couple of times, to be honest, I have thrown my body in front of a bus on a couple of bad ones over the years. I’m just happy that no bad Sandman movie has ever been made. But I’m really hoping that a good one will be. They’re a good team. And with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in charge, his instincts are good and he loves the material. He wants it to be true to the material.”
Now that Gaiman believes the best team possible is working on the film, he’s started to think of different actors to play Morpheus, the title character in the ‘Sandman’ mythology. The idea has changed a lot over the years because when the possibility of making a film first came up it was many years ago.
So Gaiman’s ideas have shifted just slightly with a certain British actor now coming to the forefront with who he would like to see in the role.
“There was a time Johnny Depp would’ve been a great Morpheus, but now he’s too old and it’s fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict (Cumberbatch) was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, wow that’s incredibly Morpheus. And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up,” Gaiman said.
“Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off.”
As of now the team behind the ‘Sandman’ movie is still developing a script that will eventually land in Gaiman’s hand for approval so the movie is still a long ways off from actually being filmed. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take so long that Hiddleston would grow out of the role as well!
