Following more than 15 years away from comic book shelves, Neil Gaiman’s monumental series The Sandman will return in 2013.
According to the Associated Press via DC Entertainment, Gaiman will begin work with award winning artist J.H. Williams III (Batwoman) to create a new series called The Sandman: Overture kicking off in October with a bi-monthly run for the title.
Gaiman created and wrote the title beginning back in 1989 to critical acclaim, but as part of his deal with DC Comics (the book was published under their more adult label Vertigo) that when he decided to leave the book, it would come to an end.
And so it did in 1996 when Gaiman wrapped up the 75-issues series.
Now, Gaiman is back with his pen working on a new title that will follow his lead character Dream prior to his capture, which was featured as the lead event when the series launched in the late 80’s.
The Sandman graphic novels were one of only a few comic book titles that landed on the New York Times best seller list. As a whole, The Sandman won a total of 26 Eisner Awards (the best of the best from comics). The series also sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
The first issue from the new series is expected to drop in comic stores on October 30.
