“Scream 7” is happening with Neve Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott and original creator Kevin Williamson will direct the upcoming sequel…
Sidney Prescott is back.
Neve Campbell made the surprising announcement on Tuesday that she’s officially returning for “Scream 7” and reprising her iconic role from the horror series after missing out on “Scream VI” due to contractual issues over her pay for the film.
Not only is Campbell returning for “Scream 7” but original series creator Kevin Williamson — who wrote the original “Scream” as well as “Scream 2” and “Scream 4” — will be returning to direct the upcoming film with a script from Guy Busick, who also co-wrote “Scream 5” and “Scream 6.”
“I’m so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!” Campbell wrote on Instagram. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!! Well actually I could. While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt [Bettinelli-Olpin] and Tyler [Gillett] team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct Scream 7!
“This was his baby and it’s his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world. Kevin is not just an inspiration as an artist but has been a dear friend for many years. To the amazing Scream fans, I hope you are as excited as I am.”
Campbell’s announcement brings “Scream 7” full circle after it appeared the sequel was all but dead following numerous issues, which included firing new series star Melissa Barrera after she made social media posts regarding the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict and then Jenna Ortega announced that she wouldn’t be returning due to scheduling conflicts with her Netflix series “Wednesday.”
Shortly thereafter, Christopher Landon — who had signed onto direct to project after working on films such as “Freaky” and “Happy Death Day” — announced that he was also leaving the film.
Now it appears “Scream 7” is back on track with Williamson in the director’s chair with his only other feature film credit coming in 1999 when he wrote and directed “Teaching Mrs. Tingle.”
With a script done, Williamson set as director and Campbell returning to star, it doesn’t seem like it will take long for “Scream 7” to get into production but it remains to be seen on the rest of the cast and if any of the past characters from other “Scream” sequels will be returning.
