Olivia Wilde has become one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood and now she’ll be directing her own take on a Marvel movie at Sony…
Olivia Wilde has become one of the most sought after directors in all of Hollywood after her breakout work on the award winning film “Booksmart.”
Now after being chased by just about every major studio, Wilde has signed onto direct a female-led Marvel movie at Sony Pictures. Katie Silberman, who also penned “Booksmart” is on board to write the movie that Wilde will direct.
While Sony isn’t saying anything at this point, the studio only controls the Spider-Verse from Marvel, which means they make movies with Spider-Man and the characters surrounding him. Beyond the Spider-Man movies Sony makes in conjunction with Marvel Studios, they’ve also made “Venom” with Tom Hardy as well as an upcoming sequel as well as the new “Morbius” movie starring Jared Leto.
Now Wilde will give her own take on a character with all signs pointing towards Spider-Woman.
Wilde seemingly confirmed as much in a tweet attached the the initial announcement about her directing a Marvel movie at Sony.

The character of Spider-Woman has taken on many forms at Marvel Comics over the years but the most notable version is the one portrayed by Jessica Drew. The origin story around Jessica Drew becoming Spider-Woman has also changed numerous times as well but the most well known version stems from her growing up in England where she contracted uranium poisoning after the radioactive substance was found in large quantities on her family’s land. In an effort to save his daughter, Jessica’s father, who was a geneticist, used an untested serum made from arachnids that he hoped would have regenerative properties to stave off the damaging effects of the uranium poisoning. Years later, Jessica emerged from a genetic accelerator with powers that largely mimicked those of a spider.
Again, there are different versions of this origin story but chances are if Wilde is directing a Spider-Woman movie, it’s likely Jessica Drew would be the character leading the movie.
Following her work on “Booksmart,” Wilde is set to direct the upcoming thriller “Don’t Worry, Darling” and she had been sought after for numerous other projects but she ultimately settled on the new Marvel movie at Sony.
