“Pennyworth” has become the latest series to get cancelled at HBO Max as new leadership takes over at DC Studios…
The origin story of Alfred Pennyworth has come to an end.
“Pennyworth” — or later known as “Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler” — has officially been cancelled after three seasons on EPIX and HBO Max.
This is the latest DC related series to come to an end as new co-CEO’s James Gunn and Peter Safran start plotting for a new direction across film, television and animation. Last week, “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” were both cancelled after four seasons on HBO Max.
“Pennyworth” followed the story of a young Alfred Pennyworth, who is a former British SAS soldier, after he started a security agency in 1960s London and soon goes to work with billionaire Thomas Wayne — future father of Bruce Wayne.
“While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros. Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world,” HBO Max said in a statement
“An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge super heroes and super villains.”
During a larger address on Tuesday, Gunn and Safran revealed plans for a new Batman to be introduced into the DCU through a film titled “The Brave and the Bold,” which will also feature Bruce Wayne’s son Damian Wayne for the first time.
Plans for the new DCU are set up for a single continuity and shared characters across all movies, TV series and animation moving forward outside of a few select projects — like Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” films — that will be labeled DC Elseworlds.
