The 12th Doctor in Doctor Who history was revealed during a special live show from BBC, take a look inside to see who will be playing the new Doctor Who!
As the show celebrates its 50th anniversary, the 12th doctor will kick off in a big way later this year as current doctor Matt Smith leaves the role after four years.
“Good luck buddy,” Smith said as he passed the mantle during Sunday’s show.
“People are hugely invested in who the new Doctor is,” Executive Producer Stephen Moffat said about the announcement. “It’s like appointing the president or something. There comes a right time or a right person to play it.”
The man who will step out of the TARDIS when the 12th doctor is regenerated will be — Peter Capaldi
Capaldi grew up in Glasgow, Scotland and has been a veteran actor for many years playing roles in The Thick of It as well as The Hour. He’s also playing a role in the new BBC adaptation of The Three Musketeers.
Capaldi will debut as the new Doctor later this year during the Doctor Who Christmas special as he takes over for Smith. Growing up as a huge fan of the show, Capaldi said he was honored to play the role.
“Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege,” Capaldi said. “Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”
