Peter Dinklage Explains Villainous Role in X-Men: Days of Future Past Isn’t So Evil After All

Peter Dinklage says that his character in X-Men: Days of Future Past isn’t a villain as much as a man who is driven to do good things that end up bad…

Peter Dinklage knows a thing or two about villainy.

On Game of Thrones he’s run into more than a few evil, wretched souls wandering around the woods of Westeros and some of them he just calls father, but either way Dinklage is all too familiar with what a bad guy looks like.

There is also a certain distinction for a bad person who has what they believe are good intentions. While the rest of the world would look at their deeds and call them wicked, this type of person truly thinks they are accomplishing grand deeds for the betterment of the world.

It’s this type of villain that Dinklage will play in his next major role when he takes over the role of a scientist and creator of the mutant hunting robots called the Sentinels in the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past.

In the film, Dinklage portrays Bolivar Trask — a genius and mad man who thinks that mutants are the biggest threat that humanity has ever faced and they must be controlled or eliminated if mankind is to survive.

In a recent interview with EW, Dinklage says that deep down Trask is not an evil man just building giant killer robots because he wants to destroy the world. It’s actually the opposite — he believes this is the only way to save the world.

“I didn’t want to play the villain,” Dinklage said. “He’s a man of science. He’s a man of invention. He actually sees what he’s doing as a good thing — (his ambition is) definitely blind and he’s quite arrogant. He’s strove all his life for a certain respect and attention.”

The good things he’s trying to accomplish will lead to the extinction or elimination of the mutant race and that’s where the X-Men, both past and present, get involved to stop him.

The film is going to be loosely based on the comic book story of the same name that took place in Uncanny X-Men No. 141 and 142 published in 1980.

The story revolves around an assassination that happens that leads to widespread anti-mutant sentiment and in a reaction the government turns to the Sentinel program to help stop the problem before it gets any worse. The result is a dystopian society where mutants live in fear and the world is ruled over by the robotic sentinels.

The feature film that will be released in 2014 plays partially into that concept with cast members from the original X-Men trilogy films as well as those that played in X-Men: First Class all taking part in the new movie.
