Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York apartment on Sunday after an apparent drug overdose…

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman — known for his roles in movies such as The Hunger Games, Almost Famous and Capote — was found dead in his apartment in New York on Sunday after an apparent drug overdose.

Several news sources confirmed the news with New York police on Sunday with CNN reporting that Hoffman was found with a needle in his arm at the time of his death.

Over the years, Hoffman battled drug addiction and had recently completed a 10 day detox for his use of prescription drugs and heroin.

The 46 year old Oscar winner took home the Academy Award for best actor for his part in the film Capote, and he was a star of dozens of high profile films including The Hunger Games movies, which he was still filming at the time of his death.

Hoffman was a versatile actor taking on roles in several Paul Thomas Anderson movies including Magnolia, The Master and Boogie Nights. He also portrayed journalist Lester Bangs in the film Almost Famous. Sadly enough, Bangs also died of a drug overdose in 1982 at the age of 33.

Hoffman is survived by a son and two daughters.
