After his fallout with Disney, James Gunn is reportedly in talks to take over ‘Suicide Squad 2’ from Warner Bros. and DC…
Marvel’s loss may be DC’s gain.
On Tuesday, The Wrap reported that James Gunn — who wrote and directed the first two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies for Marvel — was in talks to write and possibly direct ‘Suicide Squad 2’ for Warner Bros. and DC.
Gunn had already written and planned on directing the third ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie for Marvel when tweets from several years ago resurfaced where he made jokes about rape and pedophilia. Gunn later apologized for his behavior and took responsibility for the insensitive tweets but the damage was already done and Disney fired him from the movie.
The cast from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ — including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista — rallied around Gunn in an attempt to get him hired back but Marvel and Disney stuck with their decision to part ways with him.
Now it appears Gunn is poised to take over the ‘Suicide Squad’ franchise after the first movie pulled in more than $750 million at the box office despite less than stellar reviews.
After news of Gunn moving onto ‘Suicide Squad 2’ was revealed, Bautista — who has been Gunn’s most vocal advocate — immediately asked where he could sign up to join the film.

The first ‘Suicide Squad’ movie was headed up by David Ayer but he wasn’t brought back for the sequel. Instead, director Gavin O’Conner (Warrior) was brought onto lead the project but his script for ‘Suicide Squad 2’ was reportedly very similar to a planned ‘Birds of Prey’ movie that will co-star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
That’s when Warner Bros. shifted direction and apparently went after Gunn, who is reportedly being recruited to at least write the script for ‘Suicide Squad 2’ and he may end up directing the feature as well.
Stay tuned for more on this developing situation!
