Rian Johnson Reveals Who Is The Last Jedi in ‘Star Wars Episode VIII’

There are a lot of secrets surrounding ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ but director Rian Johnson just revealed one of them…

When the title for the upcoming eighth film in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise was revealed as ‘The Last Jedi’ many fans were curious who that referred to in the story.

Perhaps it was Luke Skywalker, who was the last known Jedi knight from the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy or it could be Rey, who had incredible control over the Force and figured out how to fight with a lightsaber rather quickly in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

Well director Rian Johnson isn’t keeping it a secret because he revealed in a recent interview with the New York Times exactly who is ‘the last Jedi’ and it was actually something already explained in the previous ‘Star Wars’ film.

“It’s in the opening crawl of “The Force Awakens.” Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi,” Johnson explained. “There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown.”

While the majority of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ was spent in a search for Luke after he disappeared, the sequel will focus on his new relationship with Rey, who sought him out on that deserted island planet at the end of the film.

In the first trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, Luke can be heard with an ominous tone in his voice saying “it’s time for the Jedi to end” but why exactly has he lost his faith?

“It sounds pretty dire. That’s something that we’re definitely going to dig into,” Johnson said. “The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them.
“And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, what is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi?”

There’s no word yet on when a second trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ will debut but we know the film will debut in theaters on December 15.
