The Walking Dead creator says he knows how his story will end but he’s not sure when that will happen….
For the most part, The Walking Dead seems like a never ending story that could likely go on for decades so long as the zombie apocalypse never really comes to an end.
Still, creator Robert Kirkman says he definitely sees a time when his long running zombie will conclude and he already knows how he will finish it — he’s just not sure when that might happen.
“For the books? I do. I know how the story wraps up,” Kirkman recently told Rolling Stone. “The big question is when and how far in the distance that is. But I think that most people think, oh, why would he end it? It’s so successful, he’s going to keep throwing shit at the wall to keep it going. And that’s not going to happen.
“You’ll eventually be able to see that it all kind of comes together.”
The wildly popular book series spawned the wildly popular TV series that is now the biggest show for any cable network with ratings numbers that often rival network television. The Walking Dead just recently wrapped season 6 with more record breaking numbers throughout the 16 episode run and it doesn’t look like that’s going to slow down any time soon.
The show is based on Kirkman’s source material and while the series has varied off course at times, the larger stories tend to stay the same.
Currently, The Walking Dead TV series just landed at issue No. 100 of the comic book and Kirkman is already past 150 issues at this point. In other words, it would take quite some time for the TV series to catch up to the comic book, but it could certainly happen down the road.
If that does come to pass, don’t expect Kirkman to share his end game with the TV series because he said that’s one thing that irritated him about George R.R. Martin after he told the show runners behind Game of Thrones the story arc for all of the characters and how his books would eventually end.
Kirkman says he would never do that for The Walking Dead TV series even though he’s deeply involved with the show as an executive producer and writer.
“I would never do that. That’s the one thing I’m disappointed in George R.R. Martin for doing,” Kirkman said. “He should have just been like, Fuck you. You make it up now, I’ll get to mine when I’m ready.”
As far as what’s next for Kirkman beyond prepping The Walking Dead season 7 that launches on AMC this October, he’s currently about to premiere his newest show called Outcast that debuts on Cinemax on June 3.
The dark, exorcism drama based on more of Kirkman’s comic books isn’t for the faint of heart but promises to be a deep dive into religion and the occult.
