Just about every fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has hoped for the popular television series to be resurrected as a film, but outside of an awful idea for a remake that wouldn’t have involved Joss Whedon, there hasn’t been much movement on one happening.
That doesn’t mean it won’t happen however.
Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who has been promoting her new CBS comedy The Crazy Ones, which stars her alongside Robin Williams, was asked about a potential return to the Buffy-verse.
While there are no negotiations ongoing for Gellar to pick up the wooden stake again, she’s not closing the door on the possibility.
“Joss and I always talk about a movie,” Gellar said when speaking to E! News recently. “But the thing with Buffy is that Buffy was a movie, and it ultimately didn’t work as a film. And I mean we had such miles to overcome when we were trying to do a TV show based on a movie. And one of the reasons is that the story works better over time.”
A few years ago, producers began tossing around the idea of making a Buffy movie without the original cast or with Whedon’s involvement, but after lackluster progression from the screenwriter and a backlash from fans, the idea was scrapped.
Whedon is pretty busy right now with his new ABC show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that launches in September, along with pre-production on his new film The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron that begins filming in February or March 2014.
He hasn’t expressed a desire to do a Buffy film, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen, although as each year passes and the cast gets older and older, it does get more difficult.
“At this point, the stake would be my walker and I would be hobbling in,” Gellar joked about doing a Buffy movie right now.
All laughs aside, Gellar is only 36 years old and still doesn’t look a day over 22 so pulling off the role of Buffy would be easy if the right project came along.
Gellar isn’t close the door to doing the film so long as Whedon is involved, and he has the right Buffy story to make a great movie.
“If there ever was the right story,” Gellar said, “we would do it.”
