Fans of Joss Whedon’s creation Firefly and Serenity can rejoice because the characters will come back to life in a new comic book series from Dark Horse…
Following in the tradition and popularity of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series that Dark Horse launched a few years ago, the comic book company will now introduce a brand new series following the mythology of another popular creation in the Joss Whedon-verse.
Dark Horse is current developing a new series surrounding the characters from Serenity (and Firefly although they can’t use that name because Fox owns it) that will launch in a monthly series that follows the conclusion of the film released in 2005.
While there is no release date for the series yet, Buffy the Vampire Slayer artist Georges Jeanty will head up the art on the new book that follows Captain Mal Reynolds and his group of smugglers as they travel across the universe in search of loot.
The news was first reported by Comic Book Resources with a small tease about the story and where it picks up following the events of the film Serenity.
“With River Tam in the co-pilot chair and a very pregnant Zoe reeling from the death of her husband, Wash, Mal is finding himself and his ship in greater danger than ever.”
The series will be similar in nature to the highly popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer series that was also picked up by Dark Horse after the show ended. The Dark Horse series runs in seasons just like in the television world, and Buffy has already wrapped season 8 and season 9.
For season 8, there was even a DVD and Blu-Ray release of a motion comic that continued the adventures of Buffy and the Scooby Gang.
With the huge popularity surrounding Firefly, Serenity and the characters created by Whedon the new comic is expected to be met with equal enthusiasm.
Much like the Buffy comic, Serenity will be executive produced by Whedon, who will oversee all of the storylines and character arcs for each season of the books.
More news about Serenity is expected to be released in the coming weeks as we approach New York Comic Con.
