In the latest Sleepy Hollow recap, Ichabod and Abbie goes up against a shadow demon that scares secrets out of its victims and it is tied to his past during the war…..

It’s so much fun to see Ichabod Crane live and interact in a modern world as a man out of time, but there’s some part of me that always hopes for a Sleepy Hollow prequel where the show is based solely during the Revolutionary War.
I’m not alone in this right?
The flashback scenes all the way back in season one kept getting longer and more intricate and now as we dig into season three, Ichabod is having a tryst with Betsy Ross and this story just keeps getting deeper and deeper.
Hopefully at some point one of the bright minds behind this show will decide to do an entire hour or maybe even a two-hour feature possibly showcasing the Revolutionary War being won or a pivotal moment from history but only that for the entire episode.
Those scenes are just so well done and fun to watch that here’s hoping we get to see even more this season!
With that said, let’s recap the latest Sleepy Hollow episode titled ‘Whispers in the Dark’….
Two’s Company
After rescuing Ichabod from jail a week ago, Abbie has invited her Colonial friend to move in with her until he can find his own place. He’s even been nice enough to clean and do laundry — including Abbie’s unmentionables — and made dinner although he accidentally burned it so they get Chinese food together instead.
The first day playing Jack and Chrissy is short lived, however, after Abbie is called away to a murder scene in Sleepy Hollow.
It seems Pandora has unleashed another demon to gather her more fear to add to the pool that helps her tree of evil grow even larger. Since the yogwai was defeated, she’s had to conjure another one this week — a shadow demon that preys on secrets and scares the people holding on them so badly that they have a heart attack and die.
One particular such soul was the latest murder victim who had a secret that he wouldn’t give up so the shadow demon attacked and took it from him as well as all the fright he could muster when confronted by the monster.
When Ichabod and Abbie land on the scene, there aren’t many clues why this 32-year old man would die of a heart attack but that’s the least of their worries for now. Ichabod ends up catching Pandora’s eye after he bumps into her working at a coffee shop, while Abbie comes face to face with Daniel Reynolds — an old hook up buddy from the FBI academy who has been sent to Sleepy Hollow to take over for her old boss Granger, who had his throat slashed a week ago.
Abbie and Daniel have quite a history together — so much so that Ichabod has to find somewhere else to be while they reconnect.
Back at the archives, Abbie receives the victim’s final call he made on his cell phone that day, which was to FBI headquarters. The call itself is cutoff before they can learn much, but the 15 seconds where the phone was laying on the ground while the man was dying tells a much different story.
The two witnesses decipher a whispering voice in the background saying ‘secrets…I will kill!’ and it jogs Ichabod’s memory to a time back during the war when he was charged with helping some of George Washington’s spies escape capture after one of their comrades named Marcus Collins turned on them and became an ally to the British and their commander General Howe.
It seems Marcus turned and then was forged with the spirit of this shadow demon called a ‘whispering wraith’. He was tasked with rooting out Washington’s spies in the camp and finding out everything they knew. Ichabod arrives to tell the commander of the spies — none other than Betsy Ross — that they need to get out as soon as possible because Howe will soon be onto them.
Unfortunately the getaway doesn’t happen fast enough and Marcus the shadow demon kills two of the spies, but Ichabod rescues Betsy and they ride off in great haste. During the melee to get out of the camp, Betsy encountered the whispering wraith but it didn’t attack her. Why not?
Stay tuned.
Ichabod and Abbie now know that the whispering wraith is after secrets and after some digging into the dead man’s job, they discover that he worked for the county controller’s office and had uncovered his boss embezzling funds from the Federal employee’s retirement account. He was going to be a whistle blower until the demon got him, but the witnesses also find two more people from inside the office that knew the same information.
The whispering wraith will now go for them because if it’s collecting secrets and the fear that goes along with it, these two people will be scared out of their minds.
Witness a Secret
Ichabod and Abbie arrive at the worker’s home but he refuses to answer the door. While the witnesses are trying to get him outside, the shadow demon shows up and touches both Ichabod and Abbie while waiting for the real victim to leave his house.
Flashes for Ichabod and Abbie come rushing back, which means they are both holding onto secrets.
It turns out Ichabod didn’t actually escape General Howe and instead was captured and told that if he wrote down the names of all Washington’s spies, he’d be given a pardon and allowed to return home to England. Ichabod’s secret was that he nearly gave in and wrote down the names before ultimately escaping. The guilt of that moment had been hidden in him ever since.
As for Abbie, she tracked down her father, who she hasn’t seen since she was six years old. She didn’t just find him either — Abbie has been tracking him, taking pictures and digging into his life but still hasn’t approached him much less told her sister that he’s alive and living in Saratoga, N.Y.
Thankfully, the real victim drives away which forces the whispering wraith to abandon the witnesses before he grabs the whistle blower and he crashes his car into a tree going 60.
There’s one whistle blower left before the whispering wraith has killed all of the people keeping a secret so Abbie and Ichabod make her the top priority. They keep her safe by surrounding her by pure white light, but here’s the catch — Ichabod and Abbie now know the same secret so technically they are targets as well.
The shadow demon shows up on schedule and just as it’s trying to exact the secrets from inside of the witnesses, Ichabod remembers how Betsy Ross protected herself when she encountered the same whispering wraith back in the 1700’s. She said its true name over and over again and like most demons hearing that will turn them mortal again.
So Ichabod and Abbie taunt Marcus Collins until he turns human enough again for them to shove a pipe through his heart and kill him dead. The shadow demon is no more.
His Father’s Business
Joe Corbin pops back up this week after going to pay Jenny Mills a visit and finds out that her trailer has been ransacked. It looks like whoever was there didn’t care much for valuables, but instead was looking for something specific
Since he’s there anyways, Joe asks Jenny to include him with the supernatural fun bunch because he never knew that side of his father’s life yet he treated them like family while keeping him at a distance. Jenny refuses to give in and says that she was forced into the demon hunting game when she encountered Moloch as a child and was forever cursed to that life.
Later that day, Joe gets knocked unconscious by a stranger in a car who later calls Jenny to tell her that he’s holding her friend for ransom. It seems this treasure hunter is named Randall and he knew Jenny from her former life where she would go searching for rare artifacts for Sheriff Corbin. He’s looking for the ‘Shard of Anubis’ and it’s something she possesses. All she has to do is give it up and he’ll let her and Joe go unharmed.
She nearly kicks the shit out of him but Randall fights back and gets the upper hand. Finally, Jenny hands over the rock and Randall leaves them in the woods while he drives off in his car.
Jenny unhooks Joe and she decides to let him play in their reindeer games now that he’s kind of been dragged in unwillingly after getting his head knocked around by her former treasure hunting pal Randall. The two of them are going after the ‘Shard of Anubis’ while hopefully finding out why it’s so valuable all of a sudden after Jenny had it in her possession for years.
The Box Is Opened
Following the defeat of the whispering wraith, Abbie has a meeting with her new boss/ex-boyfriend Daniel, who tells her good work and promises that they can make this new boss/employee relationship work. Daniel has aspirations to become a chief of a much bigger division while he knows deep down Abbie wants out of Sleepy Hollow. Maybe over time they can help each other achieve these goals.
Meanwhile, Ichabod is trying to get the archive building historical status so it won’t be torn down in the sake of convenience. During his meeting, Ichabod runs into an empty store front and he’s immediately taken back.
Fast forward to Ichabod and Abbie looking on a computer screen at video footage from the same area just a day earlier where the first victim was killed by the shadow demon. Ichabod notes that he talked to a woman at a coffee shop — but now that coffee shop is gone and there’s an empty storefront in its place.
When they zoom in to catch a glimpse of the woman who Ichabod was talking to, Abbie recognizes her as the same person she encountered in the bar a week ago. Her name is Pandora and Ichabod immediately goes wide eyed because this is the creature responsible for holding all the evil in the world inside one box and she’s unleashing hell on Earth while throwing every demon possible at the witnesses but to what end?
And finally there’s Pandora feeding the fear water to her scare-tree as it blooms and blossoms into its full size. Whatever Pandora is growing it can’t be good and Ichabod knows now that this is the second tribulation the witnesses have been waiting on.
Tune in next Thursday night at 9pm ET to catch the next episode of Sleepy Hollow on FOX!
