‘Sons of Anarchy’ creator Kurt Sutter will be in business with FOX for quite some time even as a sale to Disney is pending…
‘Sons of Anarchy’ creator Kurt Sutter has inked a lucrative new three-year deal with 20th Century FOX TV/FOX 21/FX Productions after spending most of his career at the studio after starting out on ‘The Shield’ several years ago.
Sutter is the first major show runner to re-up with the studio after a pending sale to Disney was completed just a few weeks ago for more than $52 billion in assets including 20th Century FOX TV and the FX Networks, which have aired all of his shows in the past.
The deal is reportedly worth at least eight figures overall with Sutter already serving as executive producer on the upcoming ‘Sons of Anarchy’ spinoff series ‘Mayans MC’, which was picked up for a 10 episode first season with a debut date likely for the fall. Of course, Sutter also helmed the hugely successful ‘Sons of Anarchy’ series, which remains the most watched show in FX history.
Under the new deal, Sutter will also continue to write, produce, direct and create new projects exclusive for FOX studios.
“Kurt Sutter has been part of the FX family since the network’s first breakout success with The Shield and throughout its ascent as one of television’s premium networks for original programming,” FX Networks and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf said. “He awed fans with the iconic Sons of Anarchy and will soon launch the next great outlaw saga Mayans MC. He epitomizes the ‘fearless’ storyteller that we value so highly and we are grateful to build on this longstanding and incredibly successful relationship with this new overall deal.”
In addition to ‘Mayans MC’, Sutter has long teased a prequel to ‘Sons of Anarchy’ that could still be in the works at FX. He’s also recently started penning comic books for Boom! Studios including ‘Lucas Stand’ — about a military veteran turned into a hitman for the Devil — and ‘Sisters of Sorrow’ — focused on a group of women who dress as nuns and exact revenge on violent offenders who have managed to slip through the justice system.
Sutter released his own statement while taking a shot at President Donald Trump while happily signing onto this new pact with FOX.
“In a scary world of orange monsters and spontaneous castrations, Fox 21 and FX is my ‘safe place’ where I feel loved and appreciated,” Sutter said.
While the sale of FOX studios and FX Networks to Disney is still pending, everybody is moving forward with business as usual including Sutter’s work with the network as he prepares for ‘Mayans MC’ to launch later this year.
