‘Sons of Anarchy’ First 9 Prequel Still Alive with Creator Kurt Sutter

Kurt Sutter is prepping the release of his new show ‘The Bastard Executioner’ at FX but he hasn’t forgotten about the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ prequel either…

‘Sons of Anarchy’ wrapped up its historic seven season run on FX last December, going down as the biggest show in network history and naturally leaving fans wanting more of the outlaw motorcycle drama from creator Kurt Sutter.

Before Jax Teller took his final ride in the last episode, Sutter had already set in motion plans to begin filming his next series — ‘The Bastard Executioner’ — which will debut in September with a 10 episode first season on FX.

Prior to the end of ‘Sons of Anarchy’, Sutter had long teased the possibility of doing a prequel about the formation of the famous MC with either a miniseries focused on the First 9 (the founding members of the Sons of Anarchy) or maybe even a short run TV series as well.

While his focus is definitely on ‘The Bastard Executioner’ right now, Sutter hasn’t forgotten about the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ prequel and it’s something he’s still looking to explore in the future.

“It’s something that we have talked about,” Sutter said recently. “It’s something that we have interest in. We are interested. I think the timing of it really depends on what unfolds. I think for me, and the network, it’s taking the next obvious and right choice and (The Bastard Executioner) is the energy we’re moving in now.”

Sutter long maintained at the end of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ that no matter what happened, he was going to take a deep breath and move away from the series for at least a couple of years before possibly returning for the prequel.

‘The Bastard Executioner’ is a highly anticipated new series for FX this Fall and chances are if the show is successful, Sutter will stay focused on that series for the immediate future. It doesn’t mean, however, that Sutter won’t jump back on a Harley, put on the cut and rev his engines for another run at ‘Sons of Anarchy’ again one day.

“I knew I didn’t want to do anything that was Sons related immediately (after it ended),” Sutter said. “I didn’t want to come right off of that and do a prequel or anything like that. I wanted to give it a couple years to breathe before we came back to do it. So none of that has gone away. We’ll see how the next couple years or at least the next year with (The Bastard Executioner) unfolds and then we’ll have to see.”

Look for ‘The Bastard Executioner’ to debut on FX with a special two-hour premiere on Tuesday night, September 15.
