The highly anticipated Sons of Anarchy spinoff now has a title and a co-creator to work alongside Kurt Sutter to bring the series to FX….
The high octane outlaw motorcycle world of Sons of Anarchy may be returning to our TV sets sooner rather than later with Mayans MC now officially in development at FX.
Sons of Anarchy Kurt Sutter will head up the project, which has been given a pilot script order at FX, with Elgin James signed on to serve as co-creator.
The new series “will be a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time, reflected through a Latino lens” according to FX.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter said in a release. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
James grew up in Boston where he was a founding member of a street gang there before eventually serving a year long sentence for a past crime he committed before returning to the film industry. He received solid reviews for his first project titled Little Birds and he was also a co-writer on the upcoming film Lowriders starring former Sons of Anarchy regular Theo Rossi as well as Eva Longoria and Supergirl star Melissa Benoist.
The series will focus around the Mayans Motorcycle Club, who first appeared in Sons of Anarchy, and played an integral role in the series throughout all seven seasons. Emilio Rivera played the leader of the Mayans MC named Marcus Alvarez in the show, but there’s no word on whether or not he will reprise that role or even make guest appearances in the new spinoff.
With the pilot script ordered at FX, chances are the Mayans MC project will move forward considering Sons of Anarchy was one of the most successful series in the history of the network.
Sutter will return to the world of Sons of Anarchy after a one season run on the show The Bastard Executioner, which he personally cancelled following the initial 10 episodes in the series.
