“Spider-Man” director Jon Watts will help to relaunch and revitalize the “Final Destination” franchise with a new film headed to HBO Max…
Following his success helming three “Spider-Man” movies — including the recent addition “Spider-Man: No Way Home” that has already grossed more than $1 billion at the box office — Jon Watts will look to cheat death as he seeks to revitalize the “Final Destination” franchise.
The highly sought after director is stepping on board as a producer for the upcoming relaunch of “Final Destination” with a sixth film in the series headed to HBO Max.
Watts wrote the story for the new “Final Destination” movie with the script being developed by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick, who also wrote the surprise horror-comedy hit “Ready or Not” as well as working on the upcoming “Scream” sequel due out on January 14.
The “Final Destination” franchise first launched in 2000 with Devon Sawa starring as a high school student who has a premonition about a plane crash that ultimately forces him and several of his friends to vacate the flight just before it actually blows up and kills everyone else on board. From that moment on, the survivors are living on borrowed time as death continues to stalk them to reclaim the lives that weren’t taken on that fateful flight.
The original film was a hit after earning $112 million at the box office on just a $23 million budget. That led to four more sequels being produced that also earned nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office.
Now Watts is looking to help relaunch the franchise with a sixth film in the series, although details about the story remains a mystery for now.
The new “Final Destination” is expected to serve as an HBO Max original, which has become a priority for the streaming service after first launching.
