An executive producer behind all of the recent “Spider-Man” movies has revealed plans for another trilogy starring Tom Holland…
Despite concerns that Tom Holland may be leaving his costume behind after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is released on December 17, an executive producer behind the franchise says not so fast.
Amy Pascal — an executive at Sony and one of the lead producers behind the entire Spider-Man franchise at the studio — has now revealed that plans are already in motion for Holland to return for three more films where he would star as the webslinger.
“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel — [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal told Fandango in a recent interview.
“We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
Questions about Holland’s future with the franchise were brought into question after several interviews where the 25-year-old British actor hinted that he might be done playing Peter Parker after the upcoming film is released in December.
“If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong,” Holland said in a recent profile on him in GQ.
Of course it’s not unusual for an actor to hint at exiting a popular role while negotiations are taking place behind the scenes in order to lock down a new contract. Marvel in particular has loosened its grip on actors inking multi-film deals after previously locking down performers for a guaranteed 6 to 10 films in some situations to guarantee that person would be involved for the long haul.
Now that Marvel is such a massive money making enterprise, most actors are flocking to the studio for the chance to play in that sandbox, which means concerns about “handshake” deals aren’t nearly as much of a concern when launching a new franchise.
Add to that, Sony — the studio that owns the rights to Spider-Man as a character — had been at odds with Marvel Studios ahead of “No Way Home” going into production before a new deal was brokered between them. Now it appears Sony is more than ready to continue that relationship with Marvel, especially considering the massive success the first two “Spider-Man” films starring Holland have found at the box office.
While Holland hasn’t commented on the news that he may be returning for three more “Spider-Man” films, it always appeared that the finality in many of his statements was based mostly around the dire expectations attached to the upcoming “No Way Home” film where villains from across the multi-verse will be showing up to battle the famed webslinger.
The idea that perhaps Peter Parker might not make it out alive only raises the stakes with audiences showing up in droves to the theater to see “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
The plan appears to be working after tickets went on sale for the film on Monday with servers crashing across several major movie ticketing sites including Fandango and AMC Theaters.
