There are a few more details about the upcoming Star Wars anthology film that will serve as a prequel about Han Solo….
With just over four months to go until ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ lands in theaters, the anticipation is heating up about the entire Star Wars universe under Disney control including the anthology films that will decorate the years between the main movies in the series.
‘Star Wars: Rogue One’, which is currently in production will focus on the Rebels attempting to steal plans for the Death Star in a prequel to the original ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’.
The second movie in the series will shift focus to a young Han Solo before he met Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi in that Mos Eisley bar and ended up as one of the generals of the Rebel Alliance.
Until now, the only thing anybody knew for sure about the Han Solo film was that it would focus on his younger years before the events in ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ but other than that, there haven’t been any details — until now.
According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the new movie will give hints as to how Han Solo became ‘the smuggler, the thief, the scoundrel’ that we all know and love, but this film won’t be pure back story on the character.
“The thing that ‘Star Wars’ has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time (explaining) the stories that have come before,” Kennedy said. “We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.
“I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love.”
Kennedy also promised that the tone of the movie won’t be too serious and that should be evident given the choice of directors as Christopher Miller and Phil Lord — famous for their work on ‘The Lego Movie’ and the ’21 Jump Street’ reboot — are in charge of the project.
“You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny,” Kennedy said. “Han Solo is the character inside ‘Star Wars’ that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be.”
Now the toughest part of this whole process will be finding an actor to play the part who will pay homage yet stand on his own two feet when compared to Harrison Ford, who has been the only Han Solo the Star Wars universe has ever known.
Casting hasn’t started for the new Han Solo, but Kennedy has some ideas in mind for the age range she’s pursuing when looking for somebody to play the famous character.
“He will definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” Kennedy said about Han Solo’s age in the movie. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”
The Star Wars Anthology Han Solo movie is expected to land in theaters on May 25, 2018.
