J.J. Abrams says that the Starkiller Base in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is an even more powerful weapon than the Death Star…
Anyone and everyone who has seen Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope remembers the moment when Grand Moff Tarkin ordered his newly crafted space station called the Death Star to showcase it’s full power by destroying Princess Leia’s home planet of Alderaan.
“That’s no moon — it’s a space station,” Ben Kenobi says the Millennium Falcon approaches the base on route to Alderaan after its destroyed.
Well according to Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams, the new Starkiller Base, which serves as the home to the First Order — the leftover pieces of the Empire who are now trying to rule the universe — is like the Death Star on steroids.
“It is very much — and it’s acknowledged as such in the movie — apparently another Death Star,” Abrams said. “But what it’s capable of, how it works, and what the threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power.”
Abrams goes onto say that thanks to the failures of the original Imperial forces led by The Emperor and Darth Vader, the new First Order believes it all came down to ambition so when they begin to construct their base, it has to be bigger, stronger and faster than the original Death Star.
“Evil’s a little bit like a drug,” Abrams said. “It takes more and more of it to have the same effect. And I think the First Order is a really deadly drug.”
The Starkiller base is visible in the upper left hand corner of the full Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster, which you can see below:
The leadership for the First Order will be headed up by General Hux (played by Domhnall Gleeson) along with his chief enforcer and Darth Vader wannabe, Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver).
As far as the power for this new space station read on only if you want a potential SPOILER for the movie…
According to the story, the Starkiller Base may not only be an homage to the original name George Lucas created for the Skywalker family but factually accurate for the true power of this space station.
If the original Death Star could blow up a planet, how about the Starkiller base being able to blow up and entire star?
A star exploding into a Red Giant or a supernova could consume an entire solar system and if that’s exactly what the Starkiller base has the power to do, it looks like the new Star Wars villains will have an even tighter grip on the universe than the Empire ever did.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18 and then we can find out for sure the fire power of this full armed and operational battle station!
