There’s a ‘Starship Troopers’ reboot on the way from the writers who also penned the new ‘Baywatch’ movie…
The only good bug is a dead bug but the bugs aren’t dead yet.
‘Starship Troopers’ is getting rebooted from Columbia Pictures with Mark Swift and Damian Shannon — who are also working on the new ‘Baywatch’ movie starring Dwayne Johnson — have been tapped to pen the project.
The new film is expected to tie in closely to the original book from Robert Heinlein rather than the 1997 film from director Paul Verhoeven, which became a cult classic after being released in DVD.
While Verhoeven used some of the themes and characters from Heinlein’s book, ‘Starship Troopers’ was much, much different from the source material that took a deeper look at a soldier going through boot camp before being tossed into the middle of an intergalactic war between humans and insects.
The original book released all the way back in 1959 followed a young recruit named Johnnie Rico, who entered military service against his parents’ wishes, while trying to become a citizen. In this post World War III future, only people who enlist in at least two years of service are allowed to vote or hold office, but Johnnie joins out of defiance and then soon finds out the hell of war as Earth gets caught up in a war against a Bug planet in the deepest reaches of space.
From the sound of things, the studio hopes to launch ‘Starship Troopers’ as a new film franchise if the first movie is a success.
