‘Stranger Things’ has officially been renewed for season 2 at Netflix and details about the next chapter in the story have been revealed…
To no one’s surprise, the breakout summer hit ‘Stranger Things’ has officially been renewed by Netflix for season 2 in 2017.
The first season was a massive success for Netflix after very little buzz about the series going into the debut, but as word of mouth picked up, the show became the most talked about pop culture phenomenon all summer long.
Netflix released a teaser video for ‘Stranger Things’ season 2 on Wednesday and you’ll notice a series of names scrolling through the trailer, which only leads to more questions about what’s happening next season.
Following news that ‘Stranger Things’ had been renewed, the Duffer rothers revealed a few new details about what fans can expect to see during season 2
MORE EPISODES
Well at least one more because the Duffer brothers confirmed that ‘Stranger Things’ season 2 will go from eight episodes to nine episodes for the sophomore year.
“We’re letting the story dictate it,” Matt Duffer said. “I think if it gets any longer, it gets unwieldy for us. We want to make sure it’s manageable and we want to be able to tell a movie-like story where it’s never treading water. We want it to have the same feel and pacing as season 1. I think if we extend it too much, it will have a very different feel.”
ALMOST EVERYBODY IS COMING BACK
According to the Duffer brothers, they almost decided to do a complete time jump and catch up with the kids we met in season one several years later as adults. Ultimately, they decided that the best move was return for a new story set in 1984 following the same group of kids who first encountered The Upside Down in season one.
“I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade. That’s something we batted around from the very beginning,” Ross Duffer said. “But for us, there’s still more story here [in the 1980s], there’s still things that are unresolved.”
One character who hasn’t been confirmed yet for season 2 — although we get a sneaky suspicion she will be back — is Eleven, who disappeared at the end of season one while battling the monster from the Upside Down.
“We don’t know about Eleven,” says Ross Duffer. “We leave that up in the air.”
NEW CHARACTERS
In addition to the returning favorites, the Duffer brothers say at least four new prominent characters will play a part in season 2. Those names that scrolled through the season 2 teaser trailer may play a part in who those new people might just be.
“There’s going to be a lot of new and interesting dynamics that we didn’t see in season 1,” Matt Duffer said.
HAWKINS AND THE UPSIDE DOWN
The Duffer brothers also revealed that season 2 won’t completely take place inside the confines of Hawkins, Indiana and the opening scene will definitely take place outside of that small town. ‘Stranger Things’ season 2 will venture back to the Upside Down, however, as they continue to explore this alternate universe that was first discovered in season one.
“We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins. And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there? We really don’t go in there much until they go in to find Will at the end,” Ross Duffer said.
“So we’ve opened up this doorway, and to us it’s exciting to talk about, like, what else is behind there? There’s a lot more mystery there to be solved.”
‘Stranger Things’ season 2 will debut on Netflix in 2017.
