‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer gave a very honest look at what he would like to change about his movie…
‘Suicide Squad’ was one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2016 and while the box office returns turned the David Ayer directed film into a real hit for Warner Bros., the film was largely panned by critics with a less than stellar response from fans as well.
The two biggest complaints about ‘Suicide Squad’ seemed to revolve around a lack of screen time for Jared Leto as The Joker as well as the supernatural threat posed by The Enchantress as the featured villain in the movie.
Now ‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer is admitting to a couple of key mistakes that he wishes he could go back and fix, namely the two biggest flaws that fans and critics found with his movie that opened last year.
In a response to a fan on Twitter, Ayer opened up about the good, the bad and the ugly with ‘Suicide Squad’ including his wish to make Leto’s Joker the featured villain as well as keeping the story more grounded in reality rather than introducing the supernatural threat that ultimately permeated the second half of the movie.
“Wish I had a time machine. I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story,” Ayer wrote. “I have to take the good and bad and learn from it. I love making movies and I love DC. I’m a high school dropout and used to paint houses for a living. I’m lucky to have the job I have. I have to give the characters the stories and plots they deserve next time. Real talk (and now, there isn’t a second edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a salt mine somewhere.)”

It’s a very honest and refreshing take from a director, who admits a few changes he wishes he could make now that the movie is out there and has been received by audiences. Ayer’s response is also important considering he’s teaming back up with Margot Robbie on a new project titled ‘Gotham City Sirens’, which puts her Harley Quinn character front and center for a female led superhero movie coming out from DC and Warner Bros.
Considering the changes Ayer would like to make to ‘Suicide Squad’ might lead to an even better version for ‘Gotham City Sirens’.
