In the ‘Supergirl’ recap, Kara battles an alien parasite, Alex makes a huge decision and the Guardian arrives in National City…
By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer
The latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ was titled ‘Changing’ and that held a lot of meanings for the characters operating in National City.
There was a parasitic alien that changed scientist Rudy Jones into a rampaging monster, hell bent on taking out climate change deniers.
There was Alex Danvers changing her entire life around by admitting to her sister that she was gay and wanted to pursue a relationship with Maggie Sawyer.
There was James Olsen, who changed from a bystander who took photos of the action to jumping into the fray under his new moniker — The Guardian.
And finally there was Mon-El, who is still trying to adapt to life on Earth and changing into a hero right before our very eyes.
The changes were everywhere this week and the reverberations will be felt throughout the remainder of the season on ‘Supergirl’.
With that said, let’s recap the latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ titled ‘Changing’…
Parasite
The episode opens this week with an introduction to a lab set up in Norway where a group of scientists are studying climate change, but they soon find a wolf buried in the ice that is actually still warm to the touch. When the lead scientist Rudy Jones takes a look at the animal, his arm gets caught in the wolf as he screeches out in pain.
It turns out, Dr. Jones was infected by a parasitic alien that attached itself to him and the creature feeds on the energy given off by other life forms. Dr. Jones ultimately killed his entire team by draining them dry and now he’s doing the same thing back in National City where he works at the university.
Dr. Jones is now on a mission to destroy anyone speaking out against climate change, especially the board member from National City University who decided to fire him after his latest round of research ended with a team of dead scientists.
Coming Out
Following her conversation with Maggie last week, Alex decides to face her fears and come out to her family and that starts with telling her sister that she’s gay.
Alex goes for a walk with Kara where she finally reveals that she’s started having feelings for Maggie and this is something that’s probably been happening much longer than she’s ever realized. It seems Alex had a best friend in high school, who she also had feelings for back then, but just didn’t realize what it all meant.
Now Alex knows she has feelings for Maggie that she wants to pursue but first things first, she has to be able to share this part of her life with the people who mean the most to her. Of course, Kara is shocked but also completely understanding and accepting of her sister coming out as gay.
Unfortunately when Alex tries to celebrate by kissing Maggie, she’s rebuffed and rejected. Maggie explains that Alex is just now realizing who she is as a person and that requires time to understand and it’s never a good idea to get into a relationship with someone “fresh off the boat”.
Getting into a relationship with her just isn’t an option right now, but Maggie promises to be there for Alex no matter what she needs.
Alex leaves the bar humiliated after finally admitting her feelings for another woman and being rejected. Later that night after skipping work, Kara shows up and tells her sister that she’s proud of her for coming out and the two embrace. A very sweet moment even as Alex’s heart is still breaking.
Zapped
Back at the DEO, Kara gets drunk during a night out with Mon-El as she continues to attempt him adjust to life as an earthling. She keeps trying to train him to understand his powers, but Mon-El doesn’t seem all that interested. To make matters worse, Mon-El decides to take a job as muscle for a local bookie, which only serves to disappoint Kara even more than he’s using his powers to hurt people rather than help them.
Kara doesn’t have a lot of time to deal with Mon-El after the alien Dr. Jones starts killing people in Natioanl City. She teams up with J’onn to set a trap for him, knowing that he’s going to go after the board member who got him fired. Unfortunately, Supergirl and J’onn are defeated by the alien and he drains both of them of their energy, which then transforms him from a man into a beast.
The energy drain doesn’t kill Supergirl or J’onn but it leaves them both in a highly weakened state, barely hanging on through life support.
Thankfully Supergirl will recharge once she gets enough exposure to ultraviolet light, but the same can’t be said for J’onn, who requires a blood transfusion. The only person who can help is M’gann M’orzz — better known as Miss Martian.
The only problem is M’gann knows she’s actually a white Martian and J’onn is a green Martian. Still with him dying, she has no choice but to help so she donates blood that can be given to J’onn to help save his life.
A Hero Comes Along
With Kara and J’onn out of commission, National City is left vulnerable to the power sucking monster hell bent on destroying anyone who doesn’t believe in climate change. James decides this is finally the right time for him to stop sitting on the sidelines and to hit the street as a hero.
Winn gives James the suit he designed for him and the next time the alien Dr. Jones shows up, he springs into action as the Guardian. At the same time the Guardian debuts, Mon-El decides to live by Kara’s example by getting into the hero business as well.
The two of them put up a great fight against Dr. Jones, but he’s still ultimately stronger than both of them together. While they are battling the creature, Supergirl finally awakens and decides she needs to get back to the fight. This time she’s going armed after visiting a nuclear power plant and retrieving two fist full’s of plutonium.
When she meets up with the monster this time and he attempts to drain her energy, he gets a double dose of plutonium and there’s always such a thing as too much energy. The alien absorbs the power and eventually overloads before exploding. Supergirl saved the day with a major assist from Mon-El and the new hero in town, the Guardian.
Supergirl tries to use her x-ray vision to peak behind the mask that covers the Guardian’s face, but his suit is laced with lead. He rides off into the night while promising to have Supergirl’s back whenever she needs him.
Back at the DEO, J’onn wakes up to find M’gann sitting next to him. She explains that he needed blood so she provided it and J’onn is thankful that she was there for him. He clutches her hand as he rolls back over to fall asleep, but M’gann can’t help but notice his other hand twitching. The white Martian blood is flowing through his veins, but what damage might be done now that his life has been saved?
As for Mon-El, Kara is proud that he finally took some responsbility and decided that he wanted to help people instead of hurt them. Sadly, his decision backfired after the battle against the parasitic creature.
As Mon-El attempts to offer assistance to a homeless man in National City, he gets zapped with a taser and tossed into a van. In the front seat sits the evil doctor who we’ve gotten to know so well this season as she says “welcome to Project Cadmus”. It seems she wants to use Mon-El as her latest weapon to take down the other aliens currently calling Earth their home.
‘Supergirl’ returns next Monday night at 9pm ET on the CW
