In the latest ‘Supergirl’ recap, Kara faces off against criminals using alien technology supplied by CADMUS, James wants to be a hero and Alex faces her feelings for Maggie…

It’s been an action packed season of ‘Supergirl’ on the CW thus far as the show as seamlessly transitioned to its new home and I’d argue that the series has been even better during the second year.
In the latest episode, Kara found herself attempting to foster Mon-El’s transition into pretending he’s a human and coming up well short of accomplishing her goals. Meanwhile as she’s wearing the cape as Supergirl, she runs up against some well armed criminals sporting some serious alien firepower while robbing banks and other establishments across National City.
Watching Supergirl beat up bad guy after bad guy puts James Olsen in the mood to save the day as well except for one problem — he doesn’t have any super powers.
And finally there’s Alex Danvers, who has spent the last few episodes getting closer and closer to Maggie Sawyer while also battling against her own emotions when trying to come to terms with how she feels about the National City police detective.
The end of the episode also brought about a major revelation that will surely stir up trouble in the weeks ahead.
With that said, let’s recap the latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ titled ‘Crossfire’…
CADMUS Powered
As the episode kicks off this week, Kara is helping her new pal Mon-El make his transition from alien visitor to pretend human being. She outfits him with a snazzy new outfit, a pair of glasses as a disguise (in case he ever wants to join her in the hero business) and a new name — Mike Matthews. She even gets him an internship at Cat Co. but that’s where things start to go horribly wrong.
See, Mon-El isn’t interested in working as much as he is hooking up with James’ assistant Eve Teschmacher, who ultimately finishes all his work for him, gives him her credit card to buy a new suit and even takes a trip to a hall closet for an afternoon delight. Mon-El is loving his new life as a human but Kara isn’t so thrilled.
Of course, Kara quickly gets distracted when she goes for coffee with James and they run into a group of bank robbers who stop directly in front of them on the street. A quick switch to Supergirl and she’s marveling at the stupidity of these crooks who are pointing a gun at her as if it will do anything.
Sadly, she doesn’t notice the lead crook named Chet Miner pointing a rather large photo cannon directly at her chest. He fires and she goes flying. James tries to intervene, but he gets beat up as well and the bad guys get away.
Back at Cat Co., the television stations are burning up with anti-alien rhetoric after these criminals got their hands on illegal technology dumped on Earth from all over the galaxy. Emotions are running so high in fact that the public is crying out for the President’s alien amnesty act to be repealed.
Kara and James both figure out that this isn’t just an accident that these thieves had alien tech — somebody supplied them with it and that somebody is Project CADMUS.
Fire It Up
After an encounter with Supergirl, the evil Project CADMUS scientist (played by Brenda Strong) who we first met several weeks ago confirms that she’s outfitting the criminals and giving them even higher powered weapons to continue the assault on National City. Her hope is to scare the public into realizing how dangerous aliens are to the world and it will eventually force the President and other nations to take action.
The plan seems to be working because every time the group attacks, Supergirl almost stops them but some weapon they’ve been given ultimately allows them to escape capture.
Kara is obviously frustrated while knowing that CADMUS is behind all of it, but even her co-workers are starting to believe that the aliens are at fault and things are probably going to get much uglier.
Meanwhile, James is bummed out after failing to stop the criminals a second time when he staked out a possible location they were going to hit and attacked them with a baseball bat. Sadly, the criminals were still far too much for him to handle and James’ plan to stop them was thwarted.
Two strikes and James decides he needs some help if he’s going to avoid a third — so he goes to Winn at the DEO and asks him to help him build some kind of suit or weapon that he could use to fight crime alongside Supergirl and the rest of the DEO. Winn shoots him down, warning James that he’s just going to get himself hurt, but it’s clear the new head of Cat Co. isn’t backing down that easy.
It’s a Party
After the original attack on a bank ended with a children’s hospital being torn up after the criminals blasted Supergirl through the building, Lena Luthor has decided to throw a fundraiser to help benefit the facility. She asks Kara to attend the party with her because thus far that’s the only friend she has in town. Of course, Lena also asks Supergirl to attend as back up in case the bad guys decide to show up and ruin the party.
Miner and his gang end up meeting with the CADMUS leader and tell her that they need more weapons because they are planning on hitting the Luthor gala and taking down all the rich socialites in one fell swoop. The CADMUS scientist tells them that the Luthor family is very capable and quite dangerous and she won’t back them against Lena.
Of course, they decide to go at it alone and when they appear, it looks like they might overpower even Supergirl, who swoops in to try and save the day. The weapons they’ve been outfitted with just seem like too much firepower, but it turns out Lena didn’t set up this fundraiser solely to benefit a children’s hospital.
She planted an electromagnetic weapon under the stage after luring in the criminals with the promise of the gala so she could help put an end to their reign of terror. Sure enough her plan works — along with some help from Winn to get the device operational — and the criminals are brought to justice.
Secrets Revealed
Throughout the episode, Alex is trying to deal with her feelings for Maggie after finding out that the super cop was dumped by her girlfriend. Alex suggests hanging out together to help console her new friend and Maggie immediately reads this that maybe she’s into girls after all. Alex quickly shoots her down and runs away rather than face the fact that she may be having feelings for a woman for the first time.
Alex is ready to come clean to Kara but they get interrupted and she’s forced to face this all on her own.
Finally after the criminals have been stopped, Alex sits down for a drink with Maggie and starts to explain how intimacy has never been her thing and maybe it’s because she was looking for the wrong people. Maybe she’s never felt strongly about a man because she’s not really into them at all. Of course, Alex ends the conversation and runs away before Maggie can really help her understand these feelings, but it certainly seems like these two are destined for a love connection.
As for James — after the latest altercation with the alien powered bad guys, Winn decides to help his friend in his quest to become a hero. Winn agrees to build him a super suit if James agrees not to go out patrolling the streets again until he’s finished. James teases that he has a name already picked out but he’s going to wait for his suit to unveil it (we already know he’s going to be ‘The Guardian’).
Meanwhile, Mon-El and Kara come to an understanding that she can’t force him to be just like her as he adjusts to life on Earth. He has to figure out his own path, his own job and what kind of person he wants to be.
And finally, Lena Luthor explains to Supergirl why she set up the trap for the criminals and how she really wants to prove that at least one person with her last name has the best of intentions for this city. Supergirl is glad that she was there to help because it was clear the alien technology was too much for her to handle on her own.
Before they can finish talking, the evil Project CADMUS scientist walks into the room, interrupting the conversation. Lena asks Supergirl to excuse them and she flies away and that’s when the bombshell gets dropped….
Lena calls her mother!
That’s right, the evil Project CADMUS leader with no name is actually Lena Luthor’s mother and now we know why she was so adamant about Miner and his crew not going after her daughter. We still don’t know her name, but it’s clear Lena’s mother has been keeping a few secrets from her.
‘Supergirl’ returns with a brand new episode next Monday night at 8pm ET on the CW.
