In the ‘Supergirl’ recap, Project Cadmus unleashes their weapon against the alien population and Kara gets a visit from an old friend looking to cash in on a favor…
By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer
This week marks the beginning of the huge four-series crossover event on the CW as Supergirl teams up with The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow for a battle to save Earth from a group of aliens known as the Dominators.
The latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ kicked things off — albeit only with the closing credits — so you’ll have to be invested in the other three series to truly see how the crossover plays out. That being said, ‘Supergirl’ still offered up an outstanding episode with plenty of twists and turns throughout.
Kara finally went head-to-head with Project Cadmus after they unleashed their ultimate weapon to take out the aliens on Earth — and sadly it’s partially Supergirl’s family that’s responsible for the catastrophe just waiting to happen.
The attack from Project Cadmus also forces Kara and Mon-El to begin to figure out their feelings for each other while Lena Luthor also reveals her true colors.
With that said, let’s recap the latest episode of ‘Supergirl’ titled ‘Medusa’…
Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving at Kara Danvers house is always an interesting time of year.
While Kara was preparing the turkey — with her heat vision — James was contemplating the best way to reveal to her that he was the Guardian. Meanwhile, Alex was knocking back a few glasses of wine while attempting to put together the right words to tell her mother that she’s gay.
Enter Mon-El with a bag full of stuffing — the kind from his mattress because clearly no one told him the difference from the kind you put inside a turkey — and he immediately starts chatting up Kara’s adoptive mother Eliza. It doesn’t take Mama Danvers long to explain to her daughter that Mon-El has a thing for her and this is all an attempt to get on her good side.
Of course, Kara doesn’t buy it but she can’t help but notice Mon-El giving her a glance or two while she’s preparing dinner.
At dinner, James, Winn and Alex are all fighting for time while giving thanks to make revelations to Kara but when a strange portal opens up over the table, that puts an end to Thanksgiving and sends everybody back to the DEO. More on that portal a little later.
Outbreak
After dinner fell apart, Kara and the others go back to the DEO to search for an answer to this strange portal that opened up while Mon-El goes to the alien bar for a few drinks. Just as he’s turning down another alien hitting on him because he’s wishing it was Kara sitting next to him at the bar, Mon-El notices a suspicious man leaving the bar and he decides to give chase.
Outside, Mon-El confronts the mysterious man, who turns out to be Hank Henshaw aka Cyborg Superman. Inside the bar, a device planted by Henshaw unleashes a deadly gas that kills all of the aliens inside. Cyborg Superman gets the better of Mon-El before escaping and when he goes back into the bar, he finds all of the aliens already dead.
Back at the DEO, it turns out the gas is some kind of alien virus and that leads Kara to deduce that it must have something to do with Project Cadmus stealing her blood to break into the Fortress of Solitude.
When she visits the Fortress, Kara discovers that Cyborg Superman was looking into something called ‘Project Medusa’, which was actually a bio-weapon developed by her own father. The virus was created to kill any and every alien life form except those from Krypton. Sadly, Mon-El also falls ill despite not dying at the bar mostly thanks to Daxamites sharing similar DNA to Kryptonians, but that won’t save him forever.
Eliza tells her daughter that without a cure, Mon-El will eventually die.
That forces Kara to look for some answers while still dealing with the fact that her own father was responsible for the weapon that could wipe out every alien on Earth. Add to that, J’onn comes clean to Kara that he’s been infected with White Martian blood, which means he’s transforming into one of them and it’s a generally crappy day for Supergirl.
Family Ties
Considering Lillian Luthor is in charge of Project Cadmus, Kara decides to talk to her daughter Lena to figure out if they are in cahoots together. Lena doesn’t offer up much in terms of answers, but she soon receives a visit from her mother that confirms their icy relationship.
Lena knows Lillian never truly loved her the same as she did Lex for any number of reasons, the least of which is that she was adopted. Lillian even confirms that fact while telling Lena that she does love her — in her own way.
What Lena doesn’t know that the DEO later figures out is that L-Corp — previously Luthor Corp — has a rare element known as Isotope-454 that will allow Project Cadmus to disperse the deadly virus all over National City, which would obviously kill ever alien in town.
Lillian sends Hank Henshaw to retrieve the isotope but Supergirl is there to stop him. The two engage in a battle when the police arrive to help lend a hand. Sadly, Maggie Sawyer gets cut down by Cyborg Superman and it appears that he’s about to get the best of Supergirl until another portal opens up inside L-Corp that sends him fleeing for cover.
When Supergirl returns to confront Lena with the truth about her mother, she responds with a combative tone and accuses her of having the same prejudice against her just because she happens to have the last name Luthor. So when Lillian returns to visit her daughter, Lena decides to help out — she will give Project Cadmus the isotope they need to unleash Medusa on National City.
Containment
Thanks to some isotope tracking software, Winn finds out when the element leaves L-Corp and follows it to the final destination where Medusa will finally be launched into the sky before exploding over National City.
Supergirl and J’onn race to save the day despite her best efforts to keep him safe from the deadly virus that will kill him if he’s exposed.
J’onn refuses to listen because this is his home now as well and if he has to die to protect it, then so be it.
When they arrive, Lena launches the missile to help prove to her mother that she’s worthy of the cause while Cyborg Superman makes sure nobody interferes. Supergirl races off to stop the missile while J’onn stays behind to fight the real Hank Henshaw.
Unfortunately, Supergirl runs into a countermeasure on the missile that sends her crashing back down to the ground but J’onn gets the better of Cyborg Superman after transforming into a monstrous White Martian.
In the midst of the fight, the missile reaches maximum altitude before exploding — much to the horror of all the aliens below. But when the gas reaches the ground, none of the aliens are affected and that’s when Lillian Luthor figures out that her daughter switched out the isotopes and effectively rendered the Medusa virus inactive.
It seems Lena Luthor is a force for good after all.
Lillian is placed under arrest but Cyborg Superman manages to get away so Project Cadmus isn’t completely dead just yet.
Back at the DEO, Eliza reveals that she’s figured out a cure to the Medusa virus and she synthesized the drug in rapid fashion to help save Mon-El’s life. She even figured out a way to use the same weapon to eliminate the White Martian cells running through J’onn’s veins to turn him back into a Green Martian. Everybody is happy in the end.
With Project Cadmus defeated, Kara is ready to enjoy a nice quiet night at home — until she opens the door to her apartment and finds Barry Allen and Cisco Ramon there waiting for her. It seems they were the ones responsible for the portals that kept opening while they tried to make sure they were transporting to the correct Earth. Now that they’ve arrived, Barry needs Supergirl to return the favor after he helped her save the day last year.
Supergirl agrees and she’s off to Earth-1 to help stave off an alien invasion! Stay tuned for recaps from ‘The Flash’, ‘Arrow’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ to see how it all plays out!
Super-Bits
During his feverish haze, Mon-El ends up kissing Kara — quite passionately — but after he’s finally cured from the Medusa virus, he plays dumb like it never happened. Clearly, he didn’t forget and neither did Kara but it looks like these two are going to have a share a first kiss again at some point down the road.
Speaking of passionate kisses — following her near death experience thanks to Cyborg Superman, Maggie comes clean to Alex and admits she has feelings for her, too. The two begin kissing and it looks like for the first time, Alex has a girlfriend.
Maggie also came out to her mother — or actually Eliza pretty much guessed what was going on while telling her daughter that she accepts her no matter who she loves.
Back in outer space, a ship is hurdling through the stars with a pair of aliens searching for Mon-El and it appears they won’t be stopped until they find him. Remember, Mon-El was the member of the royal guard back on Daxam but what these aliens want from him is anybody’s guess.
‘Supergirl’ returns next Monday night at 8pm ET on the CW!
