In the latest Supergirl recap, Kara is forced to team up with Max Lord as Non unleashes his plan for world domination starting with National City….
By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer
From the very start of the season on Supergirl, the world “myriad” has been tossed around as a sinister plan that would be unleashed on Earth by the last living Kryptonian refugees left from Fort Rozz.
Following Astra’s death, her husband Non plotted to carry out her plans while finally unveiling myriad to the citizens of National City.
It turns out myriad is a mind control device that clutches onto the person it possesses and turns them into a drone, who will do whatever is commanded of them by the king — in this case Non and his new partner in crime Indigo.
Now they’ve taken control of every human in National City minus two as well as Supergirl, who is resistant to the device. She’s running out of time and it’s all hands on deck as Supergirl tries to stop Non from taking everyone she loves away from her while looking to spread myriad from National City to the world.
With that said, let’s recap the penultimate episode of Supergirl season one titled “Myriad”…
You Dropped the Bomb on Me
Supergirl quickly finds out after James vanished following their first kiss that every human being inside National City is now under Non’s mind control. Before she can seek help, Supergirl first has to stop her teammates at the DEO, who are attempting to free all of the prisoners being held captive not to mention a throw down with Lucy Lane.
When it’s all done, Supergirl is victorious but she realizes that to conquer this problem it’s going to take a lot more than one person against everybody in National City.
She quickly flees to the Fortress of Solitude in search of answers while also trying to find her famous cousin to lend his help as well. Unfortunately, Superman is off planet and to make matters worse, Supergirl finds out that myriad was the plan Astra tried to use in an effort to save Krypton before it was destroyed. She wanted to turn everybody there into mindless drones so they could stop fighting amongst each other, bickering over politics and instead focus on saving the planet.
She failed and ended up in prison.
Now the same plan is being unleashed on National City by her not so stable husband.
When Supergirl returns to the city, she goes to Cat Co. and finds out that both Cat Grant and Maxwell Lord haven’t been affected by Non’s mind control device. It seems Max figured out after the Kryptonians broke into his facility months ago that they were searching for information on his satellite system, which is how they launched myriad in the first place. He figured out the code well enough to build a device to stop the signal from entering his head and even sent a pair of earrings to Cat Grant with the save device built in. Suddenly, Cat and Max are flirting but they’ve got bigger problems to worry about right now.
Like how Non can literally force anybody to bend to his will — including James and Winn, who he sends outside in an effort to test Supergirl’s loyalty. The two of them along with a random red shirt jump off the roof and Supergirl can only save James and Winn (of course) while the third nameless person plummets to her death.
This was just a test of Non’s power and he warns Supergirl to be careful or he’ll show of more of the things he can make these people do. Really, Non wants to express how this is a better way of life because now everybody is working together for a common cause rather than fighting over elections and watching reality TV.
Of course it’s really indentured servitude but you say potato, I say potato.
Maxwell Lord has an idea that will save the day but it will come at a cost. He built a Kryptonite bomb that could explode over National City and wipe out all the Kryptonians in one fell swoop. Of course with that explosion, approximately 8-percent of the population (roughly 300,000 people) will also die as a result. Oh and the chemical cloud left behind will make National City inhabitable for Kara and her cousin for the next 50 years or so.
Kara and Cat both disagree with Max’s plans but with time running out, he may be their only hope.
Homecoming
Alex and J’onn arrive at the Danvers house in Midvale where they are greeted by her mother Eliza. The two fugitives have been on the run for days now as they continue to search for more information about Project Cadmus while trying to find out if Alex’s father Jeremiah is really still alive.
Alex has to explain J’onn’s existence and how he took over Hank Henshaw’s identity after he died and he’s done everything since then to protect the Danvers children as a last promise to their fallen father.
It’s a touching reunion but it’s cut short when Alex finds out about what’s happening in National City. J’onn offers to go there to back up Supergirl but Alex isn’t about to allow him to go anywhere without her — especially if her sister is in danger.
Just before leaving, Alex nearly shares the news about her father with Eliza but opts for save that for another time.
J’onn uses his mental telepathy to shield Alex from the powers of myriad, but it’s a short lived defense after they arrive and are immediately attacked by Indigo. She ends up getting the best of J’onn (who is apparently really bad in battle because he’s lost pretty much every fight he’s had on the show so far) and after stabbing him, his mental block is released and Alex ends up under Non’s control just like everybody else.
Last Resort
Kara thinks she’s finally got some good news when Superman says he’s on his way to assist, but when he arrives, he suddenly turns into a mindless drone just like everybody else. Max explains that because Superman has been on Earth for so long, his mind has evolved to be more human and thus made him susceptible to the mind control device. Considering Kara grew up on Earth for the past decade or more you’d think she’d have the same problems, but alas without explanation, she’s just fine.
Anyways with J’onn and Alex captured and Superman being no help, Kara is starting to consider Max’s strategy as the only viable option. Cat refuses to believe it and instead cooks up a plan to use old television broadcast equipment to reach out to people with her own message. If all else fails, the kryptonite bomb is still available.
Meanwhile, Supergirl makes one last stand to go after Non but before she can get there, she’s intercepted by her sister Alex.
She’s dressed from head to toe in a kryptonite laced suit while wielding the same kryptonite sword that ended Astra’s life. Now Alex is completely under Non’s control and her mouth moves, but it’s his words coming out. Supergirl says she refuses to fight her sister, but with a sword drawn, she has no choice but to duel with her sister in battle.
The two Danvers sister charge at each other and fade to black.
The season finale of Supergirl airs next Monday night at 8pm ET on CBS so be there!
