“The Boys” is currently in the middle of production on season 3 but showrunner Eric Kripke is teasing an insane stunt pulled during the debut episode…
From exploding heads to roadkill dolphins to gigantic penises, “The Boys” has already managed to pull off some of the most jaw dropping moments in television history through only two seasons of the series.
So when showrunner Eric Kripke teases a stunt coming up in “The Boys” season 3 premiere as one of the most insane things they’ve ever done on the show, you really need to stand up and listen.
According to Kripke, Amazon Studios has been an incredibly supportive partner in making “The Boys” while giving them a lot of latitude to pull off some of the craziest moments in the show. One of those came while filming the season 3 debut several weeks ago and Kripke promises audiences are going to be shocked by what unfolds.
“Without giving away any spoilers, I was just in editing yesterday, and we’re doing something here in the season 3 premiere that is not only I think the craziest thing we’ve ever done, it’s got to be up there with the craziest thing anyone’s ever done,” Kripke teased when speaking to Deadline. “Maybe it won’t work. Who knows? But I’m just so high on this gag that we’re pulling off. And it’s certainly something nobody has ever seen before, probably for good reason. So all that’s really exciting.
“Every episode we do really get to show the audience something they’ve probably never seen before. And that’s exciting. How often on a TV show do you get to say that?”
Kripke had previously teased plans to feature an infamous story from “The Boys” comic book series called “Herogasm” during season 3. In the original books, “Herogasm” is a retreat where all of the superheroes gather for a weekend filled with unspeakable debauchery including drugs and lots of wild sex.
If Kripke is talking about something other than “Herogasm” for the season 3 debut then viewers really need to strap in and prepare for a truly crazy ride when those episodes finally arrive.
Beyond the insanity awaiting the season 3 premiere, Kripke also discussed the themes that will play a central role in the upcoming episodes including a look back at Vought’s history with superheroes around the world.
There was already a glimpse of that during “The Boys” season 2 when Stormfront became a central character, who was later revealed to be one of the first superpowered people ever created back in the 1930s. Despite being nearly 100 years old, Stormfront retained the same looks as she had back then as she attempted to resurrect the ideals of Nazi Germany in a modern age.
Now when “The Boys” season 3 arrives, Kripke says there will be plenty more history explored through a new character named Soldier Boy — played by “Supernatural” vet Jensen Ackles — after he was another of the early superheroes dating back to World War II.
“We’ve been certainly a political and satirical show,” Kripke explained. “We were really interested in exploring both the recent history of Vought, the company in the show, but also through that the recent history of the United States… We got really interested in the myths we tell ourselves, to feel that we’re righteous, really exploring America itself as a myth.
“A big element of the comics actually are flashbacks to World War II and Vietnam. I always really loved it because you got to see how the superhero phenomenon didn’t just affect the present, but how it affected parts of the past as well. And so we have this character, Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles, and he’s been around since World War II and was the first Vought superhero. Through him and through his story, we’re able to explore a lot of the history of the country, really.
“I’d say in previous seasons the boogeyman for you to be scared of used to be, “The terrorists are coming to get you.” And now it’s sort of metastasized into, I think, a much more ominous, “Your neighbor is coming to get you.” And that’s scary to me, how politics are turning us on each other. So, we want to explore what it means to be in America, really.”
Kripke added that “The Boys” season 3 is currently about halfway through filming so it’s probably going to be a while before the series returns to Amazon Prime but at least there’s a little bit more information available to tide everybody over until then!
